Found out the hard way. Snow covered roads this morning had to pull over and put the hubs to lock. Glad it has that as backup but doing it on the side of the snowy roads sucked.
There was another post with several saying it also did not work on their first attemp. After they did get it to go they said they had no more trouble afterwards.

They had trouble the first time also. Said that it showed on dash that it was activated but neither of the front wheels pulled. Then after it finally went in then afterwards it went in each time and pulled. If it was not on here it's on FB on the Power Stroke 6.7 page.

It showed activated on the dash. I drove it for about 2 miles never engaged. I then tried a few times and nothing. I'll try again when I Get home. This wasn't the first time i used the 4x4 tho. It worked fine last time i used it.
Same thing happened to me. In this case it was just a case of the first engagement taking a minute to go through a full cycle. Other's have suggested that the vacuum pump needs extra time the first time to remove all the air. Still others say that you should engage and roll forward and then backward a few times just to get the grease moving in all the right places.
I posted this video and it's funny how many people criticize the guy (me) for not knowing what he was doing. The video doesn't show the detail but yes, I did switch to 4Hi, then trans in neutral, switch to 4Lo wait and go. The bottom line is after this experience the truck works perfectly and doesn't hesitate to engage either 4Hi or 4Lo with the hubs in the Auto position. I would suggest that you make sure your vacuum lines are still attached. They can get yanked underneath easily especially if you're dropping the front axle for levels or lifts.
These styles of hubs can be sticky at times. Over my years I have seen on numerous occasions where someone had cleaned and re-greased the hub internals. First time trying to use them they wouldn't engage due to excessive grease. Once worked a few times they would usually be ok.
This problem can be compounded by heavy grease & cold weather. In all my years as an automotive mechanic, we always used white lithium grease in the hubs to prevent any issues.
I'm not sure what the factory uses, but this could be the case.
After reading the troubles others have had I engaged and disengaged mine a few times on a dry road while going about 35mph. I could feel and hear theme engaging.
