Hello all,
1965 F-100 with a 352 V-8; I don't post here a whole heck of a lot because even though it's rusty, it was a pretty problem free truck, up until today. I noticed that the fuel pump was squirting fuel like crazy, so I went to autozone and grabbed a new one which I installed. Then I started the truck and it ran fine for the first 20 seconds or so, and then it shut-off. I started it again and it ran for 5 more seconds before it died. It will not start anymore. The pump was pretty straightforward to install, I made sure the arm was placed under the eccentric. I did have to pull the carb line a bit since the new pump's outlet lays like half an inch lower, but I don't think that was enough to clog things, really. Do these pumps tend to fail like that when new, or am I missing something?
Any help is appreciated.
~Dan
Yes, I got one from Advance Auto, and it was DOA... brought it back (And got "Sorry we don't accept returns on fuel and electrical components")... and got one from NAPA and it worked fine
Thanks for the reply, ihcc104. I did notice yesterday that when I was trying to crank up the truck, the gas tank was being stirred inside. I thought "huh, never heard that before" but didn't think much of it until this morning. I thought it sounded like the pump was blowing air into the tank. What happened is that I assumed, since it was practically the same pump, that the orifices were the same in both. Turns out, on the new pump the orifices were inverted. I inverted the lines this morning and it's running fine now. You live you learn, I guess...
Thanks all!
Nowdays these China made fuel pumps are notoriously unreliable. Bought one for my '67 car and it ran for one week. Fortunately O'Reilly's does accept defective fuel pump returns. The exchange pump was worse as the car wouldn't run at all. So my next venture was a $45 Mr Gasket electric pump. I figured that was the end of my problems but it died after just three months. Now I've got a mechanical in it again and after 6 weeks still running but I'm selling the car so no more fuel pumps going in it.
