ok so i need to get my oil cooler replaced but that's besides the fact. i drove it on a little trip the other night ran fine. then went to start it after i was done with what i was doing turned it over didn't start the first time. cycled the key and cranked it again. started up drove it back home on the high way no spitting or sputters got off the high way it started idling like crap and shaking as i accelerated but made it home. let it sit over night and day (was at work) got home to start it and it fired up no problem but still idled funny. revved it a couple times and it seemed to clear up so i took it around the block. floored it and it ran like it was suppose to then go to the other side of the block floored it again and it had no power and sounded like it was running on 4 cylinders. pulled it back in the driveway idled weird and cleared up again went down the street and floored it ran like a scaled ape and then just died. tried cranking it over and nothing finally got it to start after holding the ignition on ran and then died again. got it pushed home and decied to fire again after a VERY long crank and it idled for a couple mins verry horrible and died on its own and hasnt started since. Please any help would be appriciated
forgot to mention, same thing happened to me around this time last year and it was the ipr but before i took it to the stealership to figure it out i put a new icp, new ficm in it not even 8 months ago. pulled the oil filter and had a buddy crank it filled up instantly, tried to start it with the icp disconnected and still nothing.... im so done with this truck its been a problem child since i bought it
year model truck?
any DTCs (codes)?
batteries and electrical system in good shape (load test batteries individually)?
do you have a way to read fuel pressure?
did you verify fuel flow to the upper fuel filter?
using motorcraft fuel and oil filters? are they clean?
eot and ect - cold soak
sure you have good fuel?
ok so update. had batteries on trickle charge over night this morning i know they were good truck cranked fine puffing black smoke out the tail pipe as i turned it over. the truck is a 2007. the only codes that it throws are 1,2,6,8 glow plugs. ficm when cranking never dropped under 47.50v i am using motorcraft filters for everything. oil and filters were changed not 1000 miles ago.
Fix the glow plugs and change the Dorman oil cooler. The truck goes into limp mode at a temp of 253 degrees - I think you are there. You posted in your other thread that you were darn close to that (248 + ?).
Besides, the oil filter components can start softening at 275 degrees (warping and failure to seal) and melting at 300.
Remember also, the oil in the engine and in the crankcase is much hotter than the temp you see ..... 50+ degrees hotter.
Lastly the Dorman oil cooler gaskets could be deteriorating in the high temp service and then they plug the HPO system (IPR, etc).
haven't tried starting it plugged in. i dont know where the block heater is or how to plug it in. im new to the diesel game. and bismic you think that it would cause a no start? or maybe a hpop? it registered oil pressure on the dummy gage in the truck. and puffs black smoke. the truck doesnt have an EGR so rule that out aswell
Yes, glow plug issues can cause a hard start / no start. So can gasket material beginning to plug the IPR. You may not have a failure yet, but you are on the verge IMO (if it hasn't happened already).
You are risking a larger repair bill w/ the high oil temps.
you think i should replace harnesses and glow plugs?? i have 8 new glow plugs here with me but id have to buy the harnesses. you think the glow plugs are whats holding me out??
Do you have a scan tool to read ICP volts and IPR % duty cycle? We need to determine if you should pull the IPR to inspect. I know the IPR is fairly new, but the high temps and the Dorman oil cooler put it at risk.
i have my programmer but that doesn't really do me no justice. i unplugged the icp and nothing. turning it over without the icp hooked up actually makes it crank over worse.
