Is it normal for the steering column to emit a whining like noise. Almost sounds like fluid flowing when you slightly kink a hose. It is very annoying, I cant stand random noises and rattles. Not talking about at full lock either. Its whenever im sitting still and let the wheel relax, but if i barely pull the wheel to the left it will stop somewhat. Any info?

I know exactly what you're talking about...mine does it in gear at a stop...sounds like it's coming up the steering column, maybe more of a growl than fluid flowing though. Definitely tied to the steering also, if I put slight pressure on the wheel to turn it gets worse. Immediately stops when applying go-pedal. Weird.
Yes, fluid was a bit of an odd out description. But think of kinking a hose and slightly relieving pressure until you hear something and thats kind of what mine sounds like. I cant really put a pin to what exactly it sounds like but yall we are obviously talking about the same thing. Not worried about the noise at full lock as thats normal.

Yep, that's it. I'm going to go through the engine bay with my wife's stethoscope, it's pissing me off I can't figure this one out. LOL
It really bothers me because i like to turn the radio down and listen to the motor sometimes and all I can focus on is the noise lol. Anyone else experiencing this?
I hate to revive an old thread but found this issue interesting as I have quite a bit of training/experience analyzing acoustic signatures from mechanical devices. Don't ask.
Taking a look at my own truck. The sound is a faint attenuation of engine whine that actually emanates from under the horn button where the steering wheel attaches to the steering shaft.
The whine originates from the steering shaft where it and the hydraulic pump bolt up the engine. Looking at the steering shaft from one end to the other you can see where Ford engineers have taken steps to mitigate the whine. There are some heavy rubber bushings encapsulating the steering shaft where it comes through the firewall. There is also a thick rubber flange/bushing under the dash where the short segment of steering shaft from the steering wheel attaches to the steering segment that exits the firewall.
There is no escaping or leaking air or other vacuum issues. It's just a very faint mechanical engine whine that the engineers have almost isolated but these trucks are so quiet you can hear it.
The only place you can hear it is if you're sitting directly in front of the steering wheel. Leaning over to either side and I can't hear it. My passengers can't hear it either.......but it is there. The only way this whine can be totally silenced in the cabin is by incorporating series of modified tuning forks around a segment of the steering shaft forward of the firewall.
As far as a prognosis goes, as the motor breaks in and becomes quieter so will the whine. Or, you'll get old like me and can't hear for squat anyway.
