Normal cooling fan operation
Sorry if this has been asked before, maybe I'm just wording my searches wrong. Anyway I just recently bought an '89 F150 I've been fixing up and while going over everything I noticed the radiator cooling fan seems to run all the time. My understanding is the fan shouldn't run until the engine warms up and the thermostat opens. Am I wrong?

Yes the fan should run all the time because it is belt driven not electric, but you should not really hear it because it has a clutch that allows it to run slower than the engine. The test of a good clutch is that the fan can be rotated by hand when the engine is off, it should not spin freely but you should be able to move it without a lot of force.
