Google like: USB 3.0 quick charge. It's new, but the latest USB protocol for both the highest data transfer and power output. Of course data does not apply with our add-on truck power ports.
I have a GPS app running realtime tracking on my iPad and USB 2.0 cannot quite keep up. It's wayyy better than battery alone, but it still slowly discharges. Some apps are quite power hungry. Of course it's amps times volts equals watts... so 2.1a is not a lot anymore, I'd say you will want 3.1a (per port) minimal (or more of course) for the new devices and power hungry apps coming out.
If u don't need to plan for this, stay with a USB 2.0 port.
OK. My iPad Air 2 OEM charger is rated at 10W (looks like current model is rated at 12W), so each of the 1045's two USB ports (2.4A each, 12W) should be able to handle a comparable load.
You can damage a device with too high a charge rate though no? Maybe that only applies to over voltage and not amps? I see the 1045 on Amazon for $34.29. Maybe a better route if your doing more than just recharging.

Within reason, the "big" chargers are OK. I regularly use my iPad's charger (10W or 12W) to recharge my iPhone 5S (OEM charger = 5W), both of which are now 2-1/2 years old.

New devices monitor and regulate what they can take for a charge.
Maybe I'm a simpleton, but wouldn't a simple plug in USB adapter in the 110 jack just above work just as well? Then I'm not cutting and removing and replacing things that originally came with the truck?
