Noisy Lifter?

Hey guys,

My 2008 3V V10 is making what sounds like a constant lifter noise on the passenger side. Its frequency increases with RPM.

I have already ruled out a loose spark plug, and an exhaust leak. The plugs were just changed a little while ago, and are still tight. At the same time I had all my exhaust studs swapped out for stainless, and they are still tight as well. Those were the first things I suspected, but are all good.

I'm thinking maybe a lifter or possibly a noisy injector? I run synthetic oil, and is changed at regular intervals.

Thanks for your help!

Now I'm not so sure it isn't an exhaust noise... When I put it in gear, it gets louder. Perhaps the exhaust manifold is cracked, or the gasket is gone. More inspecting to do...

You usually can tell an injector tick from something deeper in the engine. You could pull the valve cover on the suspect bank and take a look at the followers and cam lobes. Followers have been known to go bad from time to time. They can take out the cam lobe if not caught soon enough. Just to rule it out Sometimes if the gasket is damaged on the manifold you can get a leak no matter how tight the bolts are. You can usually hear or feel and exhaust leak if you get under there while the engine is running. Having someone hold a rag tightly over the tailpipe while you check will help build pressure to spot a leak easier.

I can put a feeler gauge between the manifold and the head. Looks like the felpro gasket installed by my garage did not hold up...

It does sound like an exhaust leak and considering the circumstances it is most likely. Keep in mind sometimes gaskets are not the same size as the flange, though you have other areas to compare it to. But a lot of gaskets are rather fragile, especially if there is no metal reinforcement in the gasket.

I had a local shop put my headers on because I didn't have time and for the $400 install price I did not feel like making time. They broke a corner off my gasket during the install. The gaskets were pretty fragile though. I gave them another gasket and they replaced the broken one at no charge. The gaskets that came with my headers were a high temp fiber type but they were pretty thick, around 1/16". Your gaskets don't look that thick. If the manifolds were not surfaced or at least checked for flatness you can easily get a leak. Especially with a thin gasket.

I never tried it but I heard of guys filling the exhaust with air pressure from the tailpipe (when the engine is cold) to check for leaks at the manifolds. You mix up some soapy water and spray it around the manifolds to find the leak.

Problem found! It was the first gasket, but not the gaskets fault at all, but rather the shop that installed it! Looks like the old saying "want something done right... do it yourself!" still applies these days! I should have a new gasket tomorrow, and get it all back together.

There you go. They put the gasket on upside down.

It wasn't upside down, but the bottom of it was shifted. It looks like they tried to slide it into place and then install the studs.

I think I need to call someone out on this, when they open up on Monday. This whole thing started when they tried to drill out a broken stud, and ended up drilling into the head, which caused an antifreeze leak.... I've had other work done at this shop which has been fine, however their workmanship on my truck has been lousy!

They took both heads off, had a machine shop weld, re-drill, and tap the all holes for 3/8" studs. They covered most of the extra expenses when they did this, but it doesn't begin to cover the time I have spent fixing their screw ups!

All I can say is "wow"...

Just... wow.

Usually, an exhaust leak is different than a lifter tick in that when you're driving, and let off the gas, the noise changes. FYI.

All back together now and running as it should with NO EXHAUST LEAKS!

I'm considering making up an invoice, and billing the garage for my labour!

That really sucks. Hope they put the heads and all related parts back on right. Otherwise you may have had other issues down the road. When you are drilling into something like this it is a good idea to put stops on the drill so it can only go so deep.

The bit went off center, and I guess he just kept drilling... Why he didn't try welding on a nut, and then backing it out instead of drilling, is beyond me...

It has run fine since the screw up. There is about 8000Km on it since then. I guess it just took a while for that gasket to work its way out of position.

Won't happen again... I went with OEM metal gaskets.

Needless to say, none of my vehicles will be in this shop again!
