One of the MANY interesting things that resulted from my little truck fire was my speedo cable burning up. Here's what it looked like when I got under there to check it out.
The cable fused to the sheath and stopped spinning but the driven gear kept going so it stripped out the square hole in my driven gear. I got a new speedo cable and now I just need the driven gear. The one that came out was a black 20 tooth, but I don't think my speedo was accurate because the tires aren't stock. I tried using an online calculator but it was asking for numbers I don't know.
Here's what I have: 300/I6, C6 trans, 3.55 rear diff, 31" tires.
Can anyone help me figure out which driven gear I need and where to buy it?
Dr. Fever, the charts will indicate what was stock, but you will have to figure the difference based on the tire size being used, since not stock. The larger the tire, the fewer times the wheels revolve to cover the same distance, so the speedometer will read slower than actual.
You can figure it out here: Speedometer Gears - ???Gary's Garagemahal. However, most original tires were 29" in diameter and if you are running 31" then the ratio of 29/31 = 1.07. Take that times the 18-toothed gear and you get 19.24. So, you need a 19-toothed gear - assuming your 18 gave the right reading and you had 29" tires.
That is exactly what I neede, thanks all! Gary, your site had the piece I was missing when I was trying to use the online calculators: the target RPMs.
Im going to order this today, hopefully my speedometer will be be back in business!
