I'm getting ready to put replace my axle pivot bushings on my 84 f150 4x4, just wondering if anyone has any tips they can give me. It doesnt look like much fun getting the old bushings out or the new ones in, any advice would be appreciated, thanks.
I just removed them in a newer vehicle. I used a propane torch to melt the rubber a little and punched out the center metal sleeve. I then used an air chisel to knock the outer sleeve and the rest of the rubber out. Took all of 5 minutes (mostly heating) to do once the bushing is down where you can get at it. Made a lot of smoke tho.
Use sandpaper and a file to clean up the axle surfaces and remove any burrs left by the air chisel.
To put the new one in I used a home made tool. I made the tool from a 1-1/2" pipe coupling and a cast iron pipe plug. I turned the plug into one end of the coupling and then drilled and tapped the pipe plug for a 1/2" bolt. I used anti seize as lube for the bolt threads and used a couple of appropriate length bolts with washers to pull the bushing into the axle. You could probably do the same with a pipe coupling, nuts, washers, and bolts also. If your bushing is a different size you may need a different size pipe coupling.
Don't try a C-clamp. I ruined an 8-Inch clamp b4 I made the tool.
Wow what a pita without the right tools. I got one done last night, I made a puller to pull out the rubber, then beat the outer sleeve out the old fashioned way. An air chisel would have been nice. I'll wait on the other one until I get access to some descent tools. Thanks for the help.
