1948 f1 transmission/clutch "stuck"

It doesn't matter how close it is to the clutch disc - only that the throw out bearing is close to the contact pads on the fingers/levers of the pressure plate.

Your picture looks like they are in normal alignment for that.

so am i missing the concept here..the throw out bearing hits the PP fingers and that lifts the clutch disc off the flywheel?

The pressure plate holds pressure on the clutch disk, holding it with great force against the flywheel. The friction between the clutch disk, the flywheel, and the pressure plate move the vehicle. The throw out bearing does not lift the clutch disk off the flywheel, just releases pressure from the pressure plate, allowing the engine, flywheel, and pressure plate to rotate while the clutch disk remains stationary. (Clutch depressed, vehicle does not move)
A little extra, just a nice to know extra, that pressure that the pressure plate exerts on the clutch disk becomes greater as the engine speed increases.
