P0470 code and EBP readings (overboost?)

So today im getting on the highway, speeding up going about 40 mph and the turbo starts to sound like its spinning out of control. I look down and I'm over 20 pounds of boost at 40 mph with my foot barely in the throttle and no power, seemed like it was overboosting. I pull over turn the truck off switch to a different towing tune, turn the truck back on and i got P0470 code. Do a little research on my phone on the side of the road and decide to continue on my travel. Truck acting normal, crazy overboost doesn't happen again, drive it for the better part of an hour before the P0470 code comes back on. I'm reading 50 PSI at hot idle for exhaust backpressure, and more like 150 psi at WOT. From what I've researched, this is way too high, correct? Strange thing is, truck seems to be acting normal for the most part. Cruising @ ~65 mph im at ~9-10 psi of boost, unloaded, according to my SCT X4. Truck is a 2005 with 341k miles. What should I do? I'm going to take off the EBP and clean it out along with the tube, but it seems like most people that have EBP problems have problems with low power, laggy, and turbo sticking, which I have none of.

9 out of 10 times this code indicates an electrical issue w/ the EBP sensor (or its plug/wiring). You can run with it unplugged to test the theory.

The P0470 indicates a max value reported to the PCM even at KOEO. Can you post EBP, MAP, and BARO at KOEO?

Yes, 150 PSI is not possible.

I would unplug the EBP. Should be ok to drive a short while that way. just don't push it too hard.

That is a default value. It isn't pertinent at this point.

i dont have a 1" deep socket so couldnt get the EBP sensor out tonight. I'm supposed to be making a 500 mile trip tomorrow. would it be better to drive the truck with the EBP plugged in or unplugged? or should i not make the trip until i get it fixed.

OK so heres an update: woke up monday morning to drive to lowe's to get a 1" deep socket and the truck was not boosting at all, VGT stuck on 0.14. Get back to the house, clean the tube and sensor, put it back in and it runs fine but still reading the ~50 psi at idle. So i go to the ford dealer, put a new EBP sensor in, STILL reading the same ~50 psi at idle. But it was running fine, so proceeded to drive it anyway. Turbo boosting normal, ~6-7 psi at 70 mph on stock tune. I've driven it 1000 miles in the last two days with zero problems at all, no CEL or anything. The truck doesn't seem to care about the bad EBP reading. What should I do?

What are you using to read the EBP? Your scan tool might not be right.

I'm using an SCT X4. It's only about 6 months old. I sure hope it's not reading incorrect. I'm reading in psi, but it gives me options to read in other units.

When I was driving to the ford dealer, the CEL came on and the truck stopped making any boost. It started running right when I put the new EBP sensor in, which is funny because the new sensor is reading the same numbers.

What ended up happening with this? I'm not having the over boosting issues you had but I have the same code and can tell the turbo is spooling easier at lower rpms. It'll prob continue to get worse over time. You replace the sensor?

I had P0470 codes and turbo farts at 70mph a while back. I replaced the EBP with one from ebay, it lasted a week. Finally paid the price for a Motorcraft and was back up and running. There are two types of EBP sensors, mine (2005) mounts to a plate on the thermostat housing. The first one I bought didn't, so don't know if there was a difference in the sensor.

I still have a P0470 code from time to time. I probably need to check the tube again to be sure it's clear.

I see you're in Hub City, I'm in Bucktown (Roebuck). We'll have to have a coffee sometime.
