Does anyone know how to remove the overhead console on the 2017? I am installing a hard-wired radar detector that mounts to my mirror and I want to get in there to tap a power source. I've searched everywhere and can't find any instructions for the 2017 or even much newer than 2011. Thanks in advance.
do you have a sun roof? you might be able to peek in above it when its opened to see how its mounted, i would look in mine for you but its way to cold out and might freeze opened lol but most likely its just snap rings, there might be a hidden bolt or 2, but it its not that easy then running the wire down the pillar might be the way to go!
In my KR Expedition I used a Blend Mount rear view mirror mount, it came with a plug in tap that got power from the rear view mirror, they sell the taps separate. I haven't hard mounted mine in my SD yet I am using the suction cup mount on the bottom of the windshield right now.
ssoundwave.... Good idea, I will poke around through there for a bit. Billy...I've got the blend mount on order. I don't think there is power in the Rear view mirror in the 2017. There isn't any gauges/leds in there. I think I need to get into the console. Maybe not. It would be great if someone had any wiring diagrams or knew if you just pull down on these consoles like with older models.
Has anyone successfully tapped into the SD mirror using the blendmount wiretaps? I plan to install a Valentine 1 when I receive my truck (hopefully this week or next) and wanted to use the wire taps.
David... I'm curious why you think the mirror has power? I guess since it automatically dims perhaps that means it's powered? I'm not sure how that works. It would for sure have power if it had the old LED read-outs for temp and direction but those aren't there now. I sure wish someone in the know could confirm whether that's a tap source or not. I would be a lot easier than getting into the overhead console.
Ken - it was an assumption on my part. If it's auto-dimming or has E-W-N-S directions displayed it has to have power. I don't have my truck yet (this week or next) other wise I'd have an answer for this question.
Mine is a Platinum. I'm assuming it's auto dim but there is no on/off button. There is not any sort of digital read out on the mirror. Sounds like if there's an auto dim then there should be 12 volts in there. I will update everyone once my detector and mount come in and I tackle this project later this week.
I've searched the forums. The 2017 mirror mount is completely different. Here is what it looks like.
Does anyone know how to remove the plastic that's attached to the window? I tried prying it and wiggling it but I don't want to use excessive force. It has to be removable.
The questions will be solved if we can remove that plastic. Because unless there is a wire that runs through the middle of that mirror ball mount, there is no power source in the mirror.
I installed a escort max360 today and the guy doing it hard wired it somewhere underneath the steering column with a relay so it would work properly and not interfere with the electronics of the vehicle. He mounted the radar to the left of the rearview mirror. Not sure if my comment helps, but he said a relay is necessary in the '17 f250.
