OK-there have been a lot of posts about ticks, taps, knocks etc. This being my first diesel, I don't have a discriminating ear for bad engine noise like I have for gas engines. I took this video on my iphone right after I started the X up after sitting out all day in 30 degree weather--plugged in. I had to really compress this video a lot but hopefully the audio is of some use. Anyone hear anything horrible. I will tell you win it's cold-really cold--20 degress and below it taps like crazy. There's no problem starting even really cold and not plugged in.
When I first got this guy, it had major stiction issues. When cold, the engine was so rough that the transmission really jerked hard changing gears until warm. After using both Hot Shot treatments and this system- Super Concentrate Engine Flushing Additive it got much better. I put tons of Diesel Kleen in every tank. Optilube XD also in every tank . Rev X every oil change. I used Archoil in the first oil change and second. I didn't use any in the recent one.-Mobil Turbodiesel 5W40 all 3 oil changes (I have had it for about 12K miles)The tapping noise when cold quieted noticeably when I put in Lucas's Anti-gel and Injector Cleaner. The one thing that scared the crap out of me is that one of the Liquid Intelligence steps had you add a cleaner to the oil while its running. The implication was just pour it in but not so much that the engine stalls. I poured what I thought what was a reasonably small amount and it made this horrible, metal to metal sound, a noise-like someone had a hammer banging from the top inside of the engine. I could put my hand on the engine and feel the noise-passenger front side cover adjacent to the valve cover-not on it. I added little tiny sips so it didn't knock until it was all in.I did this during the first oil change I still don't know what that knock was? When I drive down the road, your hear a tick in the passenger seat, a noise which would sound like a valve tick in a gas engine-not loud but always there. Is that normal? Sorry this started out as a simple question and then blossomed into an essay.
I'm on my phone and can't view or listen to your avi file. Try loading it on YouTube and posting the link.
But look around the manifold, uppipe, egr exhaust, and turbo and look for any black soot to rule out an exhaust leak.
You put that stuff in before asking here....
Stiction is from the oil side, no amounts of fuel additive will help. Archoil 9000 is good stuff but there isn't really a cure except new injectors and good oil, like full synthetic 5W-40.
The video works. I can hear a tap and if it sounded like metal to metal when putting it in... why didn't you stop?
Use the starting jumper on the passenger side to crank it and listen for uneven thumps or if it cranks nice.

That big knock I was talking about with the additive was over a year ago when I first got it. So I started reading and researching since I knew nothing about diesels. I did stop the additive amount when I put it in so it made no noise..it took forever for me to put it in-like about a tsp at a time. What would the tap you hear possibly indicate--valve?
Are there any DTCs showing? Our 6.0 injectors got quieter after doing the blue spring update. Increases fuel pressure, ensures injectors are full when they are told to fire.

I scanned it today. No codes-AE scanner did not load my ford additions. I plugged it in a couple of minutes ago. Found my activation code and we were up. Gave me one for something with #5 glow plug and 2 wheel drive solenoid switch. I didnt start the truck since its 1 am and my will wife will surely kill me--and rightly so. Will scan again with a more definitive data versus those obtained Mission Impossible style
At 17:40 Ron (RIP) shows the cable for you to unplug and use to crank with the starter to listen for a good crank. The truck in this video has a good crank sound as yours should. If you hear a crank and thump like sounds during cranking then you have an issue.
I honestly don't hear anything to be alarmed about in that last video. What kind of air filter are you running. It sounds to me like you may have something other than the OE set up on there, which can create that "thump thump" noise you're talking about.
If you had a knock in that engine you would know it, or maybe I am really def!
