I was taking off the back parking brake dust cover off of my 99 f350 dually and I noticed a nick on the axle where I think a bearing might ride but I am not sure. The nick is approximately 1 mm in size and I can barely catch my nail on it. Do i don't know if I did it or not but do I need to replace my axle now? Or can I do something to smoothe it out?
It looks to me like where the lip of your seal rides. So, if it were me, I would polish it up real good with emery cloth so that it is smooth, then see if the nick is still there. It *appears* that it is in an area between the lips of the seal, so you will probably get by with this.
Maybe some better ideas will come about here too. Good luck!
This is pretty common in the heavy duty axle world. Aftermarket seals like SKF or Stemco offer a wear sleeve that goes onto the axle. The seal then rides on the wear sleeve. Spicer may even offer this, I'm not certain.
If I ever had to do seals I would always get one with a wear sleeve just to save the axle.
My dad has a 99 1 ton chevy. Went through 2 sets of seals before he did some investigation. Learned the hard way.
