I have a 1982 f250 4wd manual with a dead 6 cylinder. I have a 69 Ltd with a 429 automatic that I want to put in the f250. Needing advice on flywheel, bellhousing, clutch & pressure plate, motor mounts and "truck" pan and sump. In the end it all goes under a 47 2 door coupe (odd I know). Appreciate any tips or advice to getting the engine swapped. Don't want to simply assume all big block parts are interchangeable
Sounds like an interesting project. I'm throwing a 54 F100 body on a 78 F150 4x4 chassis.
I would start looking for a 80-86 Ford truck with a 460/4spd for a donor truck. That would get you all the parts you need for the swap.
I find it's usually cheaper to pick up a whole truck for the parts I need. You end up with everything you need. And as a added bonus you can strip the rest of the truck. Sell any good usable parts. And scrap anything that's left. I've done this many times. By doing this I usually end up getting the parts for very cheap or free. And usually end up with some extra cash to buy more parts for my projects from the profit.
If you don't have the time or space to do this. Or just don't want to do that much work. Then start searching the salvage yards, Craigslist, The FTE classifieds or ebay for the used parts.
If you want new parts look at Rockauto.com for the flywheel, clutch set, motor mounts( not the frame brackets ) and oil pan/oil pump pick up tube. Pick a year between 80-86 and search under F250 or F350, 460/7.5L for the parts.
You have to watch with the newer stuff because they were externally balanced so the flywheel will have an extra weight on it for this. You can use a newer flywheel with your older motor, you will just need to take it to a machine shop to have the weight removed. 1979 is the cutoff for this. There seems to be a lot of issues with trying to put a stick transmission behind a 460 using older parts and getting a starter to work. I am going through this right now. I have a 390 flywheel on my 429 and am on my third starter and my truck isnt even on the road yet. I am hoping that I have it straightened out now. For this reason, I think using a 1979 or later flywheel and having it balanced and using a newer starter will eliminate a lot of headaches.
