Wondering if anyone has info/specs for 43 I6. Just bought a 43 Ford Fire Engine (originally US Army) a couple weeks back. Unfortunately, last owner didn't have too much info. Find lots of V8 info, not so much 6.
Thanks!
Gary, out of curiosity, do you know if pre-48's use the M series 254 cid engine in the bigger trucks? Any chance a fire/military truck would have had one?
Not totally sure...the specs listed are for the G series engine, used from '41-'mid '47...mid '47 going to the H series 6 cyl's. Not sure how the military would have spec'd one out...but it is possible that they used the bigger motor. But the 254 is the big flathead 6 made from '48 to '53, right? Not sure if they would have found a home, at least from the factory, in a model made 5 yrs prior.

The displacement seems a bit small, but possible. I went online to Dennis Carpenter.com, and they only list parts for one six cylinder......
It runs really well, except when it gets hot. It stalls when returning to idle from running throttle when hot. I took the carb apart, cleaned it, (no gum or varnish) and re-assembled. Needle+seat and float seem fine. If I choke it a bit, it catches itself before it stalls. Any ideas? Holley 847 carb. No air leaks anywhere that I can see, everything seems to be working well.
Gary,
I was just thinking out loud. They used the 254 in the F6's as near as I can tell from the shop manual - from 48 thru at least '52. I didn't know if there was a comparable big six for the earlier trucks or not....... thanks for the info. '52 was the first year for the OHV 215 six that replaced the 226.
I see in your signature you have a '70 fb as a daily driver - that's sweet! My youngest son owns one that is currently in pieces scattered over 3 acres. His project car..........
43,
When my '48 runs like that it's always a sign that the fuel line is plugged, usually in the tank outlet. Using the choke allows it to pull enough gas past the blockage to keep it running.
If I were you I'd pull the tank and clean it very good, replace all lines and ALWAYS use a clear inline filter before the fuel pump. If you don't use a filter, all the fine sediment goes into the tiny carb idle circuits.
A cracked fuel line will also act like that - sucks air instead of gas.
I'd definatly clean the lines, and check them for any corrosion, and clean, if not replace the fuel pump, and add a filter. My '46 w/ a '48 H series flathead 6 ran like crap until I replaced those items, and it ran great.
I've only seen and heard of the 226 flathead 6 for trucks prior to '48. The '39-'48 shop manual doesn't show any other engine for the 6 cyl. Just out of curiousity...what is the wheelbase on your truck?
I'll measure the WB tomorrow.
Thanks for the info.
I should have said, it has an inline electric 6v fuel pump, with a filter before the pump. I'll try changing the filter and lines etc. Thanks for the advice and information, so quickly! Other than this little hickup, it really runs great for a sixty year old truck. Only 27K miles (original!), and most of that was with the pump engaged and transfer case running.
