? Return line rack and pinion

I have an 01 RWD Ranger. There's a small metal line that come across the rack toward the passenger side. The last few inches are hard plastic. Looks like it has pulled most of the way off the nipple that goes into the rack. Does not go to the boot. Small leak so I'm assuming it's on the low pressure side because it would have blown off by now if it were high pressure. I'm going to try to heat it and push it back on. If this does not work can it be replaced with a rubber fuel line type hose and some clamps maybe?

That is the line from your power steering cooler. Probably not plastic, but hard compound rubber of some type. New lines are available from RockAuto for $5-8 but you may have to cut the new line to the length you need. You can probably get the same kind of line from any auto supply by telling them the diameter and what the line is used for.

So it is the line that goes to the boot. It is a metal line that was covered on hard rubber. Not sure that is what was leaking. I'm thinking it might be some antifreeze? Cleaned it up and will keep checking. Thx!

Now I am confused. Boot usually refers to the rubber part that is associated with the steering half shaft that connects the rack and pinion steering gear to the wheel. The boot would be larger on one end, maybe 2" and smaller on the outboard end, maybe 1', and looks sort of like a bellows.

FWIW, there is an equalizing tube that runs parallel to the rack, connecting the volume contained by the bellows on either end of the rack. As one end moves in, the other end moves out. The vent tube keeps the internal pressure constant, and avoids contraction and expansion of the boots as the volume shrinks or grows. In most cases the vent tube goes into a hole drilled into the 'end cap' of the rack, near where the bellows are clamped.
Have not looked as my truck is old.
