I wasn't able to get them in the swedge crimp, they are clamped on smooth tube. There is no way that they are going anywhere though. They took a lot of persuasion to get in there.

I see you've already corrected the problem, but the answer is honestly that it does nothing 99 percent of the time and you probably wouldn't even notice it if you took it off and drove without it. The main reason ford puts them on there is to avoid liability for broken fingers when you're driving off road or smack a curb and the wheel whips around, or so I've been told.

I dented one and had to order a replacement and drove without one for a week and did not notice any differences... But I've been off road in my 79 which didn't have one and had the steering track a rut and spin around so quickly it sprained my thumb.
