Pitman Arm

Just finishing up the CPP power steering kit install on my 49 and having some trouble getting the pitman arm to seat all the way into the splines on the steering box shaft. First try it would only go in about 1/4 inch, removed it to see if the splines where lining up and not damaged. They looked ok I cleaned and lubed the splines, useing a socket and large hammer I got it to seat alittle more but not all the way. Any advice on how to get the pitman arm all the on the shaft? Maybe a bigger hammer? or try heating the pitman arm? Thanks!

Do not force the arm onto the splines. Do not use a bigger hammer or heat. Is your spline count the same? I take it this is the original arm that is being installed on an aftermarket gearbox? Again, do not force it or use a bigger hammer.

the kit came with a new pitman arm, the splines seem to line up ok but don't want to seat all the way in.

Guessing that the pitman arm is split and uses a perpendicular bolt to tighten it up after the install, you can slightly pry the gap open a little more and that should make it easier to get on. Just don't over do it.

Detail pictures of both parts may help.

No luck posting photos but under my public profile I have an album, power steering upgrade, that shows the kit. I called the CPP teck line and told them my concern, he said it's not a problem if the splines on the pitman arm are not seated fully, long as the lock washer/nut is threaded all the way and tight...... it is so I should be fine.

I had the same problem with my CPP box/ pitman arm. I just pulled it up on the splines as far as I could get it and left it.
