Leaking rear axle seal

01 Supercrew. H9 rear axle code. Noticed a puddle of diff fluid at passenger side rear tire. 219,000 miles. I'm planning to replace the bearing and seal tonight. Just looking for advice from those that have done this job.

At work, truck is waiting at home. Putting together parts and tools. Differential gasket not in stock at Autozone. Find a new gasket, or use RTV gasket maker?

Planning to use Valvoline 75W-140 full-syn differential fluid for LS (friction modifier included). 3 quarts enough? I don't want to start a lubrication discussion, just wondering if any success/problems with this product.

Any tricks or just straight forward?

Thank you.

wouldn't hurt to get 4qt...just in case and yes to the modifier. The book calls for 5.5pt for the 8.8 and 9.75 rear ends, which I presume you have.
only the 10.25 rear end calls for 6.9pt. Those are generally under the 3/4ton and ton...maybe even the 7 lug nut light duty 3/4 tons

With replacing the seal... I would put in a new set of bearings & both sides too. but that is me. It is a bit more work and you'll need a puller, but that probably can be rented. Odds are good that they are getting sloppy too, unless they had recently been done

the lube with " friction modifier installed" are never enough... Add your own. I use 7 oz bottle from Auto Zone.

Thank you for the replies. Replaced both bearings and seals. I used the 7 oz Autozone friction modifier plus almost exactly 3 quarts of the 75W-140 Valvoline syn limited slip fluid. I did get a new paper gasket and used silicone RTV on the cover. I was able to remove the bearings with a 3-jaw inside puller, and rented the bearing press kit from Autozone. The bearings seemed OK, but I did notice wear on the bearing races. Not too bad of a job, just sore this morning from laying under the truck. A lift would have made it much easier.
