I installed a Gemmer 4CC07 box from a '56 F600 a few weeks back. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I swear there wasn't hardly any play in the box when I put it in. Lately I have noticed an unfortunate amount of play and can't remember if it was always there!
There are two threaded screws/plugs in the photo provided: One has a slot for a screwdriver and is on the side, some kind of adjustment bolt I was told to leave alone, the other a plug I believe for filling with oil.
The slotted screw was loose enough to adjust with only my fingers. When sunk it only had a few threads exposed. I just checked it and it was backed out probably 8 threads further than I remember it when installed.
Does this thing automatically back itself out normally? I screwed it back in with my finger, should I not?
That screw that you were told to "leave alone" is a critical adjustment. The hole on top is for lubricant fill. A search on the forum should reveal the adjustment procedure for the box.
EDIT: Ray, I found that you just trun the screw to stop with fingers, than tighten lock nut while holding the screw still, does this sound right?
Wasn't on there when I got it off the old truck, and the original box was too gunky for me to see it. I just went outside and knocked off the gunk.....yep, there it is, a lock nut.
Took it off the old 3cc03 box and onto the 4cc07.
Thank you for the help Ross. Always there to keep my truck from falling apart.
I think you'll find you need the star both to hold adjustment and to keep oil in the box. Not sure who would sell them, but someone on here must have an old one laying around.
Actually, I think I have one and I'll try it out tomorrow. For what it's worth, there was no washer on the box it came off of, and that hasn't been touched by anyone since it was bought in '87. There was no leak and it doesn't appear to have moved anytime recently.
I'll still put a star on there tomorrow or I'll find a copper crush washer. Thanks again Ross and ray.
The cover on the bottom of my Gemmer that looks like this is leaking, what will fall out or become out of adjustment by me loosening those four bolts and replacing the seal and putting that cover back on? Or should there be no real consequence?
(the other "side" cover with the adjustment screw appears not to be leaking)
What did You fill in the box for lubrication? You must not fill in oil but viscouse grease instead!
What will fall out when opening the bottom You can see here:https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ering-box.html
That cover has shims between it and the box and the shims are the preload adjustment for the worm gear. The bearing and shims may be loose when you remove that cover. This is a good time to clean, inspect and adjust the gear box. Chances are you'll find yourself removing a shim when you adjust the box. This is the first step in adjusting the box.

Manual says put gear oil in. And thats what I did. 80-W90
Ray, that may be more than I want to do at this time. I might be removing it again when I paint the interior here "soon", so I might do it then. Thank you all very much.
This Gemmer is giving me way too much trouble, but it is now leaking severely from most likely the main shaft on the right hand side of this picture I got from the internet:
Do you have a seal. When I took my box apart I noticed I didn't have one.
Notice the lip in this picture. If you are missing that seal, the oil can leak out. My box is a stock 55 box. I assume they are very similar.
As for the adjusting screw, below is a picture of how it connects to the sector roller. I'm not sure how to get it properly adjusted. That is something I will need to learn very soon.
They say the stock one with the keyed star washer leaks. The oil can come out the key channel.
My box is completely torn apart waiting on the rebuild kit, so if you need any special pictures I can get them easy.
Here is that seal: https://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_t...-and-f250.html
It's a felt seal.....how does that keep the oil from eventually leaking out? Maybe because it is pressed against the frame rail??
After a little searching it looks like these might be what I need. I really appreciate your pictures, that is very helpful at illustrating what I'm dealing with.
