Got home with my first 56 F-100, custom cab long bed I found in a in the field, sunk a foot in the mud. It Was pouring down rain and the guy was eager to get it gone, known him for years and trust in his word. Now that I think about it he probably doesn't know what I have found.
After a quick research I found it To be a 56 110 WD cab but it sitting on a 56 on 118 that's been cut down at the tail.. so, do you go after a new frame to put the cab back on a 110 or leave it alone. The number on cab does match pink slip but haven't found one on frame yet.. what to do???????
knowing driveline will have to be messed with and frame but I just so happen to have access to a short bed kit.
Thanks
It is a fairly common mod to shorten a LWB frame and make it into a SWB. It is NOT common to shorten one by chopping off the tail section. Is the wheelbase still at 118 inches?
Looking at this it should be a 110swb.. right?
It's funny, measures closer to 115, can't see anything messed with on the frame itself though..
heres a pic of the hack off job! Everything else's matches the truck, Color/ trans / motor
The good news is that the truck in general looks to be in fairly good condition. I would say that someone in the past has just cut the bed and frame off to shorten it. I have never seen that before but I have also learned to expect the unexpected. The bed is definitely a long bed, the stakes above the fenders give that away. It should also have inner wheelwell tubs and the width should be around 52 inches vs 49. The cab/ID plate does not match the bed...I would find the VIN on the frame and see if it matches the ID plate.
So, I'll look for the vin on the front right frame rail, should it match the cab if it's original?? Which we know it's most likely wrong.. the Qs then, go with the cab vin or the frame and which is more valuable??
I have misread your first post. So was the cab replaced or just the data plate. If so then the frame VIN and the data plate don't match.
Or the man operating the data plate punch machine made a mistake. This happened. My truck's data plate says it was red but it was my truck was always Meadow Green. 1956 was the first year you could get a long bed F100. Perhaps the operater was new or your truck was built early in the year and he wasn't used to an 118" WB F100.
That's the question at hand, " does the frame read the same" .. I'm assuming not but I like your theory.. makes me feel a little better to think the guy might have mispunched. I'm sick right now or I would be in there looking for the frame vin.. what I've read it's located on top 10" back from pas front center line..???
If that's true I think I need to pull the inside fender.?
i is odd that the data plate matches everything but that , so you might be on to something.
do you know if a site to look at history? All the ones I found say it's a invailed vin number
Now remember the number is not a VIN . It is a serial number on a data plate. So it won't work if you punch it in on a website somewhere since it doesn't have the correct number of digits.
I think what he is trying to tell you is that the VIN number does not conform to the 1981 standard 17 character VIN. If you put an old VIN number into systems such as e-bay, it will just show non conforming. The plate is a data plate and the true VIN for the vehicle will be on the frame in 3 spots. If nothing has been changed, it should match the data plate VIN
