Rear Bilsteins

Greetings all.......

I've gotten my rear shocks in today.....Bilstein 5100's Model 33-236964 for the rear of my excursion. I'm not sure they are the correct shocks......Installed, I can only feel maybe 2.5 - 3" of the shaft inside of the black rubber boot. This doesn't seem like it is very much travel.

My ride height in the rear from the center of the wheel to the top of the wheel well is at 26.25".

Any guidance would be appreciated........

33-185569 goes on the rear

and

33-185606 goes on front

for modified B code/ V code springs.

Not sure if you have stock suspension etc?

Do the ones for the rear have the flat bar at the top to install to the body of the ex?? That need 2 bolts to fasten it??

The flat bar is part # 19-6001 from ICON. You need 2 for the top of the rear shocks. They go through the upper shock mounting bushing.

5100s are for lifted vehicles more than 4 inches over stock height. If you are stock height, you need the 4600s. If you bottom out while riding on those 5100s, you will shove the shaft through the top of the shock. I am running 4600s for that very reason. 4WheelParts would not sell me 5100s for my stock height X.

Ok.....What is stock height? 22" in front/23" in rear? Right now my ex is sitting at 25.25" in the front and 26.25" in the rear.....measured from the center of the wheel hub to the top of the wheel well.....the 33-187297 that I put on the fronts fit well, the rears are the issue.

Is this it:

Icon Vehicle Dynamics Shock Bar Pin - Rear Shock Mounts

If it is, how does it go thru the shock eye? Pressed in? or can I just push it thru by hand? Also, wont the curved part of the eye hit the body of the Ex when it is bolted in place???

There should be a rubber bushing it fits in, and then that gets pressed into the round end of the shock. I had a complete set on my spare parts shelf a while back...not sure if I still have them.

So you can't just put them in by hand......they have to be pressed in?

Would be tough to get them in by "hand". It is a tight fit. Your Bilsteins didn't come with any???

You can grease them up and tap them in with a hammer while supporting the top of the shock between the open jaws of a vice. Two people make it a bit easier, also having the bushings warm vs cold

I installed the 33-236964 on mine about 2 years ago. However, I am running a Pro Comp 4" lift on mine. My center of hub to fender is somewhere around 27.75".
According to the Bilstein chart that I have saved (possibly outdated), the 33-236964 is for an Excursion with a 3" to a 5" lift. If you are at 26.25" that would put you at 2.25" over stock height. So I'm not so sure that I would use them. Maybe take a look at 24-185479, it is a 4600 series that is listed for 0" to 1" lift. Also, I would take a measurement on your bumpstop and see if that distance is greater than your shock travel, if it is that may cause you an issue.
If in doubt give Bilstein tech support a call.

FYI....mine came with the top bracket already installed in the rear shock.

Good Luck!

This got me thinking

The previous owner of my Ex installed the 5100 series all around, including the steering stabilizer. My Ex is not lifted. Am I living on borrowed time with the rears? I don't tend to drive places where there's a lot of suspension travel, but now I'm a bit worried about running the 5100s on the rear and am thinking about getting the KYB Monomax to replace them. I think the fronts are OK, since they're listed as 0-2.5 inches of lift.
