Transmission Pan Upgrade?

Hello all, I've had a question or two concerning the transmission pan on my truck. I drive a 2006 F-250 6.0 PSD. It is about time I change the transmission fluid and filter, but I've heard some things about an upgraded transmission pan. Pretty much, I've been told that you can swap out the 6.0L transmission pan for the 6.4L transmission pan. By doing this, this allows for better filtration and flow. I haven't done a transmission fluid change on this truck since I've become the new owner. My questions are following:

How often do I change the fluid and filters? (In terms of Mileage) I've heard every 40k miles.

What are the benefits of switching out the transmission pans?

Is it even possible?

Thanks in advance, Stanley6.0

Try checking this out:

A lot of good info here along with some childish jibberish.

Also, will it harm the transmission if I put a different kind of transmission fluid in? I plan on putting the Mercon SP into it.. What will happen if the previous owner used a different kind?

Is there a way to tell what kind of fluid he used by looking at the fluid itself? Any other way?

There is no benefit whatsoever to just swapping the pans. In fact, just swapping the pans will cause problems. The new pan is larger and won't hold the old style filter in place.

The only reason to swap pans is to install the newer style filter. The newer filter won't fit in the older pan. The 2008 filter is a MUCH better filter. It will greatly increase the cleanliness of your trans fluid. It doesn't flow any better than the older filter, but it cleans much better.

MERCON SP is fine. If the previous owner used anything except MERCON SP or MERCON LV I'd expect you would be having problems by now.

There is no way to tell by looking at it. A very, very good lab might be able to run some tests to determine what fluid is in it. I wouldn't be surprised if this will cost you over a thousand dollars to run a test like this.
