My fuel gauge didn't work, even with two new tanks and senders. With the wiring diagram I traced it down to the selector switch. My ohmmeter confirmed that there was no continuity between the 3 terminals that were supposed to. I know I've got a couple of used ones "somewhere" but I decided to take apart the old one to see what the problem was. After bending back the tabs I found the switch to be in pretty good condition! I cleaned all of the contacts what with the 48 year accumulation of spilled coffee, cigarette ashes, and probably numerous bodily fluids that contaminated the contacts. Reassembling this was a puzzle for sure what with all the detent *****, springs, and sliding contacts that had to be held in place while reinstalling the cover and bending the tabs back down before the thing exploded all over the place. The end result is that now it functions as it should. It makes you respect the assembly line workers that put these things together back in the day.
This also works on external reverse light switches. I have recovered many 3 and 4-speed (used to be rare) switches through disassembly and cleaning. In fact I was all ready to reply to your post with that solution but you were already there!
