EGR issues, decision time

My 2011 has 62k miles and has been throwing P0401 codes, which results in losing power. I assume the EGR cooler is clogged. So I went to the dealership to see if it's covered, and was told there's no warranty coverage.

I would rather blockoff the EGR cooler than repair it. I would also like the extra performance from a tuner like the MiniMaxx. I do prefer the stock exhaust and not real excited about the drone/smell that comes with deleted DPF.

Will I have issues if it's tuned with the EGR blocked off, and stock exhaust? Or am I better off doing a full delete at this point?

I was under the impression it's not that big of a deal to clean the egr cooler on these trucks. I'm not sure, but if I need to remove it to install block off plates, it might just be better to clean and reinstall.

My 2014 was throwing the same code only i was under warranty dealer said we are replacing the egr. The next day i went and seen the dealer he said go see the mechanic he said it was super easy to remove and replace less then 2hrs it was the 1st one he did also said if it wasn't under warranty it could have been easily cleaned and put back in service. I signed the warranty invoice the total was under $600.00 Canadian not bad really.

I would clean with some simple green and warm water, then use a compressor to blow dry it out. You would have to do an entire delete to block off the EGR. You can essential clean it for just a few bucks and some of your time.

62,000 Miles and a clogged EGR sounds really early to be having issues. Do you do a lot of idling?

I don't tow much, just a few times a year. If that's the case, it makes the decision is alot easier. I assumed you could delete the EGR and leave the DPF. I drove a friends with full delete and hot tune, it was a blast.

Wait......What?!? Those are two completely different systems. They are independent of one another and can be deleted independent of one another.

No they can't. Dpf needs to be deleted in order to block off the egr As far as I've ever been told. You can delete the dpf and leave the egr in tact as it will be tuned shut in the delete tunes but the pipe from the manifold to the egr valve will soot off if you don't run blocker plates.

That is incorrect. Many guys delete the DPF and only unplug the EGR. I ran this way for 2 weeks and1200 miles while my block off plates were being custom made

I was looking at it the other way, wanting to get rid of EGR problems by means of disconnect/blockoff/delete but still keep the DPF. After some more research it appears that is not possible.

I'm on the fence between a full delete or trade on a 2017, leaning towards the delete. I was impressed with the performance tuning, and fighting for traction in 4th gear lol

I got the code and when I took the truck to the dealer I was one week past the 5 years and at 45,900 miles. It was covered under warranty. I'm pretty sure it was the 8/80,000 emissions warranty that covers it so I would double check with your dealer or perhaps try another dealer.

Side question. On the work order it states "VACUUM AND FILL BOTH COOLING SYSTEMS." Are they referring to the main two systems that are on the truck or is there a separate system(s) used for the EGR? I could swear that I asked them and was told it was a separate system from the main systems.

Can you run it just unplugged short term, sure it won't soot off in a hour. If you just leave it unplugged and not blocked forever you are going to run into problems eventually if you ever try and go back to stock thou.
