Front fender brace question

  1. On my 1948 F1 I'm having trouble getting fender to fit with the fender brace on. My radiator cradle is in the front holes on cross member should those braces be mounted with that or in the holes farther back. Next question is there different fender braces for big trucks could I possibly have the wrong one. Thanks for any help

The front holes are for 6-cylinder trucks, the rear for V8's. If you have a non-stock engine it may be in the forward position for more clearance. The air deflectors on the underside of the hood are also different and in different positions for 6's and 8's.

I struggled mightily to get my front clip back together. It was embarrassing! Some people on this forum can make a fender with a hammer, a bag of sand, and a piece of sheet metal LOL--and I couldn't even bolt mine together correctly. There's a thread I started awhile back that shows what not to do. As I mentioned, some of the pictures of my attempts are quite embarrassing.

I learned from patient experts here on FTE that getting your fenders on correctly is a matter of doing things in the proper order: Start with radiator support, then get the inner fenders installed. Next put your fenders on. Surprisingly, the last thing you do is the fender supports. Once I followed this order, my problems were solved.

Thanks for the info guys . It looks like I have the right parts. I'll try to put it together in that order to see if it helps. Any other tips on getting the front clip on and lined up are appriciated. Using fiberglass fenders so maybe part of my troubles

Assemble everything loosely. And don't forget to install the pad #16153 in Bill diagram above. Then just snug up the bolts. Align your fenders then do a final torque.

That pad is important as it keeps the top of the fender from oilcanning. It also stabilizes the assembly and helps prevent fender cracking.

I know this is an old thread, but I am building a 49 f1 and cannot find the front fender braces anywhere (part 16272) shown above. Has anybody found a place to order these from? Some people have told me they are obsolete, others said I do not need on a 49 etc......Any guidance would be appreciated.

You will definitely need those supports. I think I have a couple in my pile-o-parts. I will look later today.

I found mine on ebay. Search on part #16272 and don't forget the rubber pads - #16153.
