Thought I'd post my variation to AZLugz's thread over on the SD forum where he posted a bunch of stuff on his 2016 F-250 Platinum Build. I liked what he did with the lights he added for his running boards, but I just thought I'd do a different twist. Even though this mod isn't unique to the 6.7, I think a lot of 6.7 owners spend much of their time on this forum section. So that's why I decided to post this on here.
Like AZLugz posted, I used the available (and unused) OE lighting plugs that are mounted under the back of the cab on both sides, and I picked up the same speaker plugs from Amazon
. This speaker plug isn't sealed for exterior use because it's for a speaker harness. So once I got the entire assembly pre-fabbed with the lights and wiring, I put some rtv into the back of each speaker plug to seal the plug and wires leading into it from moisture intrusion. I let it sit overnight so the rtv would cure, and then I took the two lighting assemblies out to the truck and installed them.
I used these LED rock light pods with Cree LEDs in them.
. These seem well made, and they put out plenty of light. I bought the box of 6, but I only used four (2 pods on each side). I plan on using the remaining two for additional backup lights. I mounted the pods up higher on the underside of the cab, and they are pointed slightly inboard. I figured the amount of light they generate would be enough to light up the entire underside of the truck and the ground leading up to the running boards, and they do just that. The lights come on when the interior lights come on. So with a simple click of the remote to unlock the doors, the lights come on. These also generate enough light to look under the truck if I suspect any mechanical problems under there.
I can take pictures of where I mounted them if anyone is interested. I forgot to take pics while it was still light outside.
Funny, I bought this exact set last night!!! I am going to put them in the brackets for the running boards so I have light beside the truck when lock/unlock/enter/exit it. I had already thought about running a bead of RTV or black silicon around the connectors once I get it all wired up to make them waterproof. If you only used four of them, that's quite a bit of light. I may rethink the three on each side pointing outward. Or may just put them on the front and rear brackets and leave the center one open. I'll play with them after dark when I start and see how many I want/need. I thought about buying the amber ones to match the side lights, but then remembered that they go off after entering the truck.
Monty, I suspect the running board brackets might be too thick for the hardware that comes with these lights. Both sets of screws are just barely long enough to get through a single layer of sheet metal and still have enough screw protruding for the nylock nuts. The hardware is good quality, and I like the allen screw heads. But, the screws are shorter than a person would need in some applications. Thought you might like a heads up that you may need to pick up some longer SS screws.

Well, apparently I don't have the plugs underneath the truck to power the LED lights I just bought.
Really?! The plugs are inboard from the back end of the running boards, and the plug is pointed forward with a dummy plug in it (no wires). It's snowing outside, otherwise I'd run outside to take a pic...oh heck, wait a minute.
Only had to kneel down and turn on the new lights to snap a pic. This was taken on the driver's side looking under the running board just in front of the back running board bracket. Hopefully you were just looking in the wrong spot.
