I have been searching for an excursion for a couple months now and it's been a little challenging trying to find exactly what I want. I have been wanting to stick to a 05 and preferably a 6.0 diesel.
I guess I am wondering how much different the 05 is from the 03 and 04? I am familiar with the super duty and know the they changed quite a bit from 04 to 05, but it doesn't look like the excursions made as many changes? Looks like they still have the old dash, old hubs, front leafs, etc? Do any excursions have front coils?
Just wondering if the changes were enough to stick to my original thought of finding an 05, or if I should open my search to 03's and 04's as well. Thanks.
Only the RWD EXs have coil springs, all years of the 4X4 models have the front leaf springs. Other than the progressive improvements made to the 6.0 PSD as time went on everything else is pretty much unchanged from year to year on these big wagons. The '05 got the fresh grille and lights but they can be easily adapted onto earlier rigs for the same look.

Ok thank you. That confirms what I thought I was seeing the sales photos. Just the headlights, grille, and progressive engine changes. Like you said the lights and grille are just a swap out, all you're really gaining is the 2005 6.0 PSD changes.
Most of the '05 PSD Excursions have '04 6L engines, only the last few months of production got actual '05 6L engines, but still retained the older dash, I believe a RED Ford sticker on the engine, denotes these.
It retained the cluster from 2002, but the dash is colored differently and looks sharp with the black.
The sticker to signify a 2005 engine is actually an orange-yellow color. The red is for a 2006 engine, the blue is a 2004 engine. I forgot what color the 2003 engine sticker is.
Either way, I love my 2005 excursion that came with a 2005 engine. You will too as they're a needle in a haystack, but totally worth it!
Mine is one of the last built 2005 trucks with the 2005 engine. I love my truck but here is a couple of things to consider.
1- previous mods are not always good on these trucks. Buy in person so you can see it. Drive it hard and check the degas. Also ensure it's at the proper coolant level before you start.
