Re: 1989 E250HD, 5.8, E40D, 115K on tranny, 15K on motor--the tranny shifts very strong in the 1-2-3 shifts, but there is a shudder that has set in when 3rd or 4th gear is attempting lockup. If I keep my foot deep in it and avoid lockup until I am up to the desired speed, then let off the throttle, the lockup happens without any issues. I have gotten very good at driving around the shudder, but I should set about fixing it.
My analysis - the solenoids that drive TC lockup have s41t the bed and can't do the job anymore. Is this the problem, and how might it be remedied? (I am not sure if I am looking at a repairable TC, or if I need a whole new converter.....)
Thanks in advance, I'm new to these Ford boards, but they seem like a great resource, similar to the BMW forums I have been spending way too much time on lately.

The dreaded "shudder" is happening to me too. You already did the brake riding test to narrow it down. My 90 had it real bad when I purchased it and after a much needed fluid change it only does it when it is cold and only the first or second time it shifts into OD. Perhaps after another fluid change it will go away altogether (wishfull thinking). John
I did two fluid changes, one with not much effect at about 90K miles, then another (after another 12K miles) in which we also drained the torque converter. That made things noticeably better, but after yet another 10K miles or so, it is coming back pretty strong.
I had some other funny symptoms with the shudder - I am running a hypertech chip and a 160 degree thermostat. Early last summer, when the AC was on and the motor was running warmer, the shudder all but went away. By the end of July, though, it was shuddering at all ambient and engine temps. (That was also about a thousand miles after the TC flush, so it may have been more related to that than the engine temp.)
Maybe I will try another fluid swap for another temporary improvement.....
Hey folks - digging in the archives, there was at least one happy customer who installed a B&M Transpak kit in his E4OD and had some good results - has anyone else used these kits? What sort of results?
I'm having an entirely different transmission issue. I have a '92 F-150 5.0/E4OD/4.10/4x4/195K mi. It slips in second, and then after shifting into third it stops. It also, under light throttle, will occasionally shift in and out of overdrive for no reason. The transmission seems solid otherwise, so I don't really want to replace it if I don't have to. Any thoughts?
Any of you out there who have the E40D, I would highly recommend getting the Banks Transcommand module they offer. Bankspower.com. I am not a rep or anything for them, I just have one installed and love it to death. Firmed up the shifts points real well, but not too much and increased overall tranny line pressure so there is not as much slip in the clutch bands, resulting in less heat! It is very easy to install and the customer/tech help staff were phenominal. I broke a pin off the Banks module and they overnight fedexed me new ones no charge so I could get back on the road. Banks claims it will double the life of your tranny, the jury is still out on that one, but at 95K I think they might not be BS'ing me...
One problem they had with that transmission was with the overdrive clutch cylinder snap ring dislodging. I assume this could cause a stumbling problem going from 3 to 4 ( OD )
It was corrected in later models with a stronger snap ring.
I am guessing that the tranny would have to be taken apart to fix it .
In which case a general overhaul might be worth doing but I don't know
