Millenium Possum Oil Gauge Continued
Hey everyone,
My Milennium Possum is at the mechanic for my oil gauge problem. I browsed the forums and I've tried what I could.
Essentially, I fixed the ignition module problem, did the necessary tests. When I was done, the vehicle ran very well. I went to the parts store to return the parts ( I buy all of my parts I think I need, replace the one, and then return everything).
I also changed my oil.
When I was done shopping, I came back out, and the oil gauge was non-functioning again. To determine a true lack of oil pressure, I listened carefully, and pulled the oil pressure cutoff switch pigtail. Once that happened, the vehicle died under the simulated loss of pressure.
I then filled the bowls and tried to leave. The vehicle kept dying like it had no pressure but it was running for 5 miles before that.
the next day,
I determined that I had oil pressure. I took off the old sender and I cranked the engine over without fuel or spark. Within 5 seconds I had a lot of oil coming out of the top. Definitely more than the 4 psi required to shut the switch.
After that, I jumped the switch and put the key to RUN. It was pumping fuel, so the relay was working, and the circuit was functional.
This isolated it to the switch or pressure. I tried to really shove the dongle into the switch(thinking that it was loose) and then when I did that I started it up again.
This time, it sounded like it was gonna run. It didn't cut out. But, the dash gauge was not working again. I then shut it off. I had my insurance tow to a mechanic for free triage.
I think that I have two problems like an onion.
Symptoms:
Starts and dies
Intermittent oil gauge in dash
Oil pressure
New sender still oil gauge in dash
One thing you could try is adding a Tee at the oil pressure sender so you can add a mechanical gauge and actually check the pressure while bypassing the electric gauge.
most auot parts stores should have the parts.
Once you have the tee in place, you can buy a single oil pressure gauge or cheep set of gauges from the parts store. I bought the set so I would be able to test the alternator, water temp, and oil pressure if needed. I found mine on clearance for $20. You could also go to harbor freight and buy a actual pressure gauge and that would allow you to check oil pressure, and transmission pressures. I am not sure if you can check fuel pressure with out damaging the gauge but HF also has a fuel pressure/vacuum gauge witch comes in very handy diagnosing problems and making carb adjustments.

BTW very nice looking van.
