One thing I like about the split back bench in most cars and the Supercab truck is that it has a built in cupholder. I've never owned a vehicle with a cupholder like is being discussed here, seems like unnecessary luxury to ugly up the interior. Every human comes with a built in cupholders, one at the end of each arm and another between the legs.
Yes but with a little more find them than grind them
Good point. But I bet that little girl grew up to appreciate and know how to drive a manual (actually, that character grew up to be Jessica Chastain....).
I tried to teach my 12-year-old to shift for me so I could hold my beverage:
Didn't work out so well.....
Glue some pieces of PVC plastic plumbing pipe to provide some walls kinda like a drinking glass.
I liked Chris' idea on this. I might even fit together a couple different sizes of PVC with PCV cement to "stagger" the cup size options going from what fits inside (epoxied to) the existing console/holder up to a commuter size mug/glass/cup, the higher you go. Notching for a mug handle in each would be a plus . I would get all OCD with it by grinding down the inside with a rotary tool to smooth out the seams and dressing/rounding the upper hard cut edges by sanding, then apply a wrinkle finish for plastic. Bead in some sealer around the outside of the PVC where it meets the console. Cork disks dropped into the bottom wouldn't hurt either for condensation reasons .
Oh, dude... boy oh boy can I understand what you're talking about... if you're interested, look at what I did with my brother's SHO project a few years ago:
I have several of the 92-96 bench seat cup holders floating around from different parts trucks. I have mounted several to older bench seats. They are ideal due to the fact that they move forward and back with the seat, they dont get in the way of any shifters, and can be easily removed to be cleaned.

I have that thread bookmarked over at TCCA. I'm still looking for a 1st or 2nd Gen SHO. I just found a Contour SVT. My wife said yes ! She loved her Mercury Mystique, but this one is a stick. She likes a manual trans...(notice how I didn't say she likes a stick)....no off color comments required (not that you ever would). You reserve that for those fuzzy things hanging from my rearview mirrors
