On a 1959 4X4; I'm putting the rear brakes back together.
What is the size difference if any between the hold down nails in front and rear?
What is the numbering system on the heads.
It appears there is supposed to be a "thrust washer" in the adjusting screw assembly, I can't find where these are sold. What is the correct name? Could this be replaced with a brass washer?
quickest way is to go to Napa, and get a wheel brake kit that had all the springs, pins, clips etc in it, I think it was about 10.00 for a kit to do both wheels

Looks like every adjuster sold today has a washer. If all new have washers, why can't I just replace the missing washer?
I'm not going to open my '73 but memory tells me there is a washer in the back break adjusters.
I just did not want to leave it out.
As for quick and easy buy at Napa. I got two kits from D. Carpenter for $20 plus $3 to send them back. Another sure thing $10 kit from a local and they don't fit either.
3/4 inch hold down springs came out and 1" springs in the kits. 2 1/32" nails were in the rear. Almost impossible to crunch down a 1" spring.
I'll work it out but can't depend on local counter sales to get it right. Most don't have a schematic for 1959.

I posted a pic of the brakes, there's no washer pictured.
1973/79 F100/150 shows a washer, but all the brake parts are different!
With the pin spring (2068) basically holding the shoe against the backing plate, I've never understood how one or two 64ths of an inch in pin length can make any difference, but then... I'm not an engineer!

I don't think it does. Over 45 years and hundreds of brake jobs, I've noticed some stick out more than others. Some cars are a real beast to get the spring compressed enough and others easy. Ford springs generally seem to go on tighter than GM.
After the last three "parts houses", I agree 100%. Leaving the last I thought WTH I can make a 2 1/32" nail. Driving home 20 miles, I thought over the measurements of springs and nails and came to the same conclusion.
Well, I tried a 2 1/4" nail and it is too long. The hold down springs protrude past the break shoes. May or may not be a problem but I wouldn't want the hold down springs to fail. I resurrected the original 2 1/32" nails and put it all back together for another day.
Now on to the pinion shaft seal.
Good deal. Sometimes a pesky detail like that can bog you down. When I was doing the rears on my 29 (with a 57 9 inch and the standard 1 3/4" shoes) I found that every parts kit had the nails for 2" shoes. I had to really scrounge through all my coffee cans of brake parts to come up with the right ones, no parts store had them in the parts kit.
And FWIW, I'm doing brakes on my 59 4x4 right now and there are no washers on the adjusters.
