Is this right?

Hey yall, Just curious. I have posted in regards to this matter before. My truck is a 1980 F150 Original 302, 4 speed 4x4. its never gonna be a speed demon but this seems wrong. if I drive nice like I have it floored to maintain 66 MPH, if I drive like an A** and wind it out in first and second i can get it up to 75 or 80. I know my carb is junk and needs rebuilt or replaced but it runs well enough once its warm. No smoke no knocks Just really gutless. do I have a real problem here or just a tired motor?

Things to check;

Once it's fully warmed up, turn it off and take the aircleaner off. Is the choke door wide open, standing straight up on top the carb? It should be. Make sure it's fully warmed up and then check.

Of course check the air filter.

Did they ever have a electronically controlled 302 in California in 1980(asking the guys in the know on this). Does your truck have a vacuum line going to the distributor? The reason I ask, that can be a can of worms that presents other problems.

Have you ever put a timing light on it and checked it?

When is the last time you changed the fuel filter?

Get a flashlight and with the aircleaner off, engine off, look down the carb throat. Get someone to hold the gas pedal inside to the floor. Are the butterflies in the carb wide open? Make sure to do this test with help to make sure carpets are not in the way and the throttle linkage is working correctly. Holding it open with your hand under the hood is not a good test.

No way for us to tell as we know very little about your truck. We would need to know the axle ratio(s) and tire sizes to have an idea.
