I have a 2000 exp 4x4 5.4L with a strange noise that only happens from a cold or some what cooled down start. It goes away after the first run through first gear. It sounds almost like an exhaust leak or a vacume build up in the engine. I dont know too much about the ford systems and you guys seem to know quite a bit so I figured I would shoot.I am not getting any sort of engine light either. please advise my lost self
i just got a 2000 expedition and sometimes heard a weird noise like if an antenna was going up or down by the passenger side. It kinda also sounded like a leak or something, however, it was a stabalizing pump that sometimes goes on to level out the car. This might be the noise you sometimes. To see if you have this option, check under the glove, by the right foot of the front passenger, there should be a on/off swithch there for it.
Might be no big thing, assuming it is not a knock or obvious metalic sound. I noticed, on my Expy, what I will call louder than normal engine noises. I really can't explain it except I can hear the overall engine sounds louder. I finally decided that there must be an intake air by-pass or some such other polution piece of crap opening when cold and closing in a very short period. Mine is quiet by the end of my long driveway but sounds like I have the windows and hood open the first time I pull from a stop after start up. At first, I thought it was over reving (tranny slip) but watching the tach, it starts off and runs through 1st & 2nd just like it does hot. Lengthy but useful I hope. At least you might be able to sleep at night.
