Tranny Upgrades

Have any of you actually done the solenoid upgrades and 6.4 tranny pan/filter? Have you seen a noticeable difference in shifting? I'm looking at doing it but wondering if it's worth it. Some of the advertised claims seem like hype (cooling from the pan fins, increased stiffness from the upgraded pan, etc).

I don't know anything about the solenoid "upgrade" or the cooling fins and increased stiffness, but the reason to upgrade to the 2008 and up transmission pan is for the better filtration. Rather than the bypass filtration previous to the update. There's a couple really good threads about this here in the 6.0 section.
The upgrade was done to all of the transmissions, not just the one behind the 6.4 liter.

Yes I'm talking about 2 separate upgrades I guess, possibly 3. I understand the filtration and it's value, I also understand the tranny pan doesn't have to be the heavy duty ones with "cooling fins" which aren't proven to cool anything.

I should have asked more directly about the solenoid upgrades to increase line pressure for quicker and firmer shifts.

I've heard of the 6.4 pan upgrade for better filtration, but very interested in the solenoid upgrades. Mine currently doesn't like to shift into OD unless I let off the pedal. All the other gears transition smoothly. Figured maybe my TC wasn't locking up all the way. Been so busy researching the engine repairs & figured I would deal with trans after the engine takes all my $

Aftermarket tuning and the new solenoid don't mix from what I've read previously. Seems that the tuning already increases line pressure and the two together don't mesh.

Can't comment on the solenoids -- there is some stuff in this thread about finned pans, but the main thing is to do the update, you want to spend the money for something more than the Ford pan... Well read on:

I had read that thread, thus the reason I'm just looking at a factory pan. My question mainly is about the solenoids. I am running a tuner but hadn't heard the previous comment about them not getting a along with aftermarket tunes.

Do you need to replace the gasket when changing pans or reuse the old one?

It is reusable (or meant to be) I didn't replace mine but it also didn't have many miles on it. No leaks...

Will the 08 filter fit in one of those aluminum pans from Mag-hytec? I know it is a waste of money, but it sooooo pretty

As long as you order a 2008 Super duty pan it will fit. 2008 filter requires 2008 pan.

Here's the cheapest I could find the pan & filter
6.4 transmission pan
6.4 transmission filter
So for $101.41 + shipping + fluid you can upgrade.
Seems like a cheap upgrade to me!

Wonder if a simple fluid change along with this upgrade might fix my OD not smoothly shifting...
Anyone have a cheaper source for the parts? (I'm a bargain hunter!)

Right forgot Mag Hytec makes a 2008 too. Lazy amazon search. It is pricy compared to the FORD pan but it does look pretty and my truck sits pretty high so my kids will definitely see it

Amazon tells me that filter will not fit my 2003

Subscribing because I am planning on the '08 pan and filter replacement and interested in this solenoid theory to see where it goes from here.
