I'm planning to make my '66 longbed truck into a short bed. Here is some of the data I've gathered....
Wheel base, SB = 115", LB = 129", difference = 14".
The styleside beds, the length of the floor in front of the wheelhouse, SB = 22.25", LB = 35.25", difference = 13".
So, I assume on a shortbed the rear axle was positioned 1" farther forward in the wheel opening? Looking at my truck the wheel position looks good so I guess I just shorten my frame/wheelbase to 116" instead of 115".
Also, in '65, the shortbed wheelbase went from 114" to 115", I assume the twin I beam moved the front axle front 1"?
Anyone know the story on what was going on here?
I'm going to convert my truck to 4x4 and shorten the bed/frame so I can sort of do whatever I want but I'd like to make the bed the same as a factory shortbed.
Brother man, buy a short bed and save all the pain of making 4 sunrise to sunset cuts and welds. There needs to be a section cut out in front of the wheel well as well as behind. Find a Dentside 4wd truck/chassis and put your cab and new short bed on it, the running gear of choice in it, save the grief and hard work. There will be enough of both doing it this way.

The problem is a rust free short bed in PA is to much money. A dentside 4x4 shortbed, if I could find one, still doesn't have disc brakes or power steering. The bed requires 13" removed in the front and 7" in the rear. Also I'm going to shorten the bedside tool box and the frame to match. Right now I'm thinking '78-79 front axle and suspension. Undecided on the engine/trans, whether to go old school, carb/C6/205, or EFI and an OD trans. I've been building stuff since I was a kid, a '60 F100 shortbed converted to 4x4 and a 460/C6 swap. I've shortened beds and frames. I put a 302 in a Pinto. An '86 F350 4x4 made into a shortbed with an EFI 460 swapped in. Thats a few of my past projects. When I was five my dad bought a new '66 F100 CC shortbed. I grew up with that truck and then drove it in HS. I've always wanted one but a 4x4, now I'm going to build it. Plus, I view this as maybe a 3-5 year project, maybe even longer, so it'll get done.
Let Nothing but fear stop you lol....
I would do same if I wanted a short bed...anything can be done
I don't fear any of it. The bed shortening is straightforward, just takes a little bit of time. Deciding what 4x4 setup I use is my issue right now, and along with that what engine/trans. Kind of narrowed down to '78/9 F150, TTB, or a '97-'03 complete chassis. I guess that's not really narrowed down.
