hey everyone, wasn't sure which section to put this in?
I heard the other day that Dodge was dropping the Cummins engine, to be replaced with the M9 mercedes. then Ford would have the Cummins. around 2005 I heard it would happen. anyone else heard this, or know what Ford's plans are for the next few years? I am a big fan of the Cummins, and Ford as well. but definately not a fan of the new 6.0L. if I was to buy a brand new truck, as much as I hate to say it, I would consider a Dodge since its got the Cummins.
I strongly doubt it, since Ford just spent a ton of money redesigning the Powerstoke, scaling it down to a 6.0. If they were planning on going with the Cummins, they would have just hung in with the 7.4 for a few more years..
Besides, rumors like this fly around every time someone at the big three uses the bathroom.
I also heard that Chrysler was replacing the Cummins with the Mercedes. I thought it was interesting since the only reason I would ever buy a Dodge would be for the Cummins. Too bad for Cummins...
In my area there are 2 Alabama Power trucks running around with a cummings engine in them, the person driving the truck adv that they are just test trucks to compare drivability, this per the driver. Also it sounded very strange idleing.
I know Dodge is using a Mercedes diesel in their "Sprinter" van series. However, freightliner or Mercedes makes the entire vehicle for them. I'm not sure what advantage there would be to parting ways with Cummins on their truck line. I think some people buy a Dodge just because of the Cummins engine. It's got a great reputation.
As far as Ford using it in the future, if they really wanted to use the Cummins diesel, I'm not sure there was ever anything stopping them from using it in the past!! Cummins is an independent company that would probably be thrilled to sell its engines to all three automakers. We have a Ford tractor at work that has a Cummins in it. I think the International / Navistar is a great engine, speaking for the 2001 7.3 litre.
Word I got on the Cummins issue was that both Ford and Dodge had contracts with Cummins. However, having the engine in both manufacturers vehicles at the same time would cause the apocalypse or something, so dodge has had it for some years, and now it's soon to be Ford's turn to run it. Besides, wasn't Cummins the engine for Ford before the Powerstroke was born in the early '90s?
I don't go back that far with Ford diesels, but I can only remember their relationship with International. My earlier trucks were gas. Some of the other members might help out on this.
As much as I hate to admit it, Diesels are supposed to be I-6's. BUT my dad's F-550 weighs 14000+ Lbs. with the 6.0/auto, and that puppy will move when she needs to.

I believe Ford went with the new 6.0 because the 7.3 couldn't meet emmission standards, so they couldn't stay with the 7.3. I haven't heard of Ford planning on using the Cummins, but I have heard Dodge was going to start using Mercedes, which makes sense being they are owned by the same company. Also I think the Mercedes diesel is probably a good engine, but don't have any experience with it. That would be cool if Ford was able to offer two choices for a diesel. Oh, and somebody mentioned the Cummins is an option on the F450-650, it is only available on the F-650 and F-750 as far as I've ever seen. As to why Ford has always used a V8, I don't know for sure. It seems to me though it would be because you are limited to a small displacement with an I-6. On another note, I did read an article the other day that Ford is going to offer a diesel in the F-150 in 2005 or 2006.
