recently acquired a 99 F250SD that runs rougher than a cob. In the steering column alone I replaced 7 broken parts undoing the PO butchery. Rebuilt(replaced everything) both door lock systems, too corroded to work.
now working on the motor
5.4 Triton, no engine codes, idles fairly smooth @800 rpm or thereabouts.
in gear and trying to accelerate it coughs and sputters. On the freeway it smoothed out some, was mostly drivable..
PO replaced various coil packs with junkyard parts of various vintage, I want to put in a matching set of 8. All trustworthy references suggest Motorcraft DG508 and Motorcraft SP-479 AGSF22WM plugs
my question is this: is there a better or equivalent plug and coil setup
that doesn't cost a fortune?
second question: is there any easy way to get to the IAC to clean it?
this was a former fleet vehicle13 yrs abused by everyone, but maintained, then 3 years with PO (a scrapper) being horribly abused and butchered,
my son has been working on the truck for me, but his knee is quite bunged up,so he can hardly walk.
I guess I will be lying across the engine tomorrow.
I found a deal on the Motorcraft coils, should be here Friday.
as with most vehicles I have owned, most of the work is doing the maintenance that was ignored for the last 10 years, and redoing things that were done wrong the right way.
A couple weeks ago I found an F450 dump with the V10. I had the money, but unfortunately it would have doubled the price to tow it all the way across the state.
Do you have a Werner or similar brand platform? They are awesome and Home Depot or Lowes typically has them in stock. A taller larger version is also available. Solid investment.

yep. leftover from my years as a contractor. It does get tiresome climbing up over the radiator sometimes. also have a plank that lays in the fender groves on either side which straddles the engine bay, I made that whn I rebuilt my 95 F250
Years ago I knew a guy who had a 78 F250 4x4 with huge 33" tires on it. In order to work on his truck he would put the stock wheels on it. It looked quite silly with the tailgate 6 feet in the air and the bumper on the ground.
Rumor has it the "generic" coil packs are the same as Motorcraft.. all you are buying is the name..
I've used them for years
Rumor is one thing, however myself and others have confirmed Denso and Motorcraft truly being the same. Denso is a quality OEM product, I personally wouldn't take a chance on it. Their realy isn't a reason to replace coil packs until they fail, three on my truck with 150k miles.
The COP boots are made by ac Delco, I got mine from the local mom and pop Auto parts store for like 2 dollars a piece. After picking them up the stamping in the rubber was identical to my oem boots CASH IN MY POCKET
I bought the Accel brand , the yellow hot rod coils, from amazon...the first time. They lasted about as long as the 1 yr warranty. Then i went to the ford dealer and bought Motorcraft. Never had an issue after that. The worst one to change was on the drivers side rear. It took me about 30 minutes to change all of them. Im 5'6 and not exactly skinny. No big deal witha 1/4" ratchet.
