It is certainly more cost effective to rebuild. Especially if you do the rebuilding yourself! Taking the engine/trans to a rebuilder costs about like ordering refurbished from an engine supplier. I don't think you can get brand new motors for these anymore. Doing all you can yourself, of course, will cut costs, and you'll learn from the experience.

Anyways, while rebuilding is there a certain kit you recommend I can provide to the re builder? For example better rods, pistons etc... don't know what Im talking about.
I know a cam is not for me. I just want a good strong rebuild for motor and trans.
I would definitely consider rebuilding both the engine and trans. Even figuring the cost of having a machine shop rebuild the engine, and a trans shop go through the trans, it is still much less than you would spend on a new truck. i'm guessing you are fond of the truck ( as you should be! ) and it is a really clean example, so i'd definitely lean that way.
