i have a 78 f150 with a 351m and a c6 auto trans. The transmission is acting up. when i try to drive from a dead stop alot of times it wont go into gear so im just sitting there revving the engine until it catches. This only happens in first gear and sometimes reverse. Another problem is if im going around a corner the transmission will go out of gear and the engine will just be revving until it catches, but only if its in first gear. I never have problems going from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. It is always somewhere in the first gear where it will go out of gear, like i am in neutral. Is this transmission in need of a rebuild? Anybody know how much it normally will cost to get it done, hopefully not too much since i'm po'. Also it leaks too, when there is enough fluid in it it will run better but it still slips. So basicaly i just need to get some ideas about what is wrong and what i can do here. thanks.
Had similar problem with my C6. All the tranny shops wanted to sell me a rebuild but one honest shop told me it was the modulater valve on the passenger side of the trans. Pull the vacuum line that runs from the valve up to the intake. If there is fluid in it then the valve is probably bad. Doesn't cost much. Had mine replaced for $45 a couple of years ago. Hope that is all it is.
Good luck.
hey thanks for the replies. I think that i will check out the modulator valve. Only thing is is that I dont know what a modulator valve is. The repair manual that i have dosent show anything about it. But from the info E150X wrote i know its on the passenger side? Now when you say that the vaccuum line runs from the modulator to the intake are you talking about the intake on the top of the engine? Is there anything involved with pulling the valve? Can i replace the modulator myself?
