351 M Flooding

Hey guys. I have a 1981 F350 dump truck with a 351 M motor. Its been sitting for about a year without much use. I ran it a couple times, and I would try and start it at least once a month.

Fired her up the other day and it ran for a few minutes before cutting out.
I tried to start it multiple times and she didnt want to start. It reeked of gas after a bunch of cranks so I assume its flooding for some reason.

Wheres a good place to start to try and diagnose the problem? A carb adjustment perhaps? Never done that before.

Thanks

First, verify the carb's linkages are all free/no binding and workable. While you have the air cleaner off, check its condition.

Second, it could be some crud or goobers got into the float needle...or the float is stuck. Try tapping on the bowl where the float is....mebbe it'll loosen up if stuck.

Third, it could be a shot power valve....she'll be hard to start but run, and smell very "rich."

If it sat for a year with today's fuel in it, there's a chance the carburetor needs to be rebuilt as all the rubber parts will have deteriorated.

I tinkered with the carb and was able to get it started. It ran ok for about 5 minutes before flooding out again, so I'm guessing its a carb issue

Check to make sure the choke plate is opening all the way.

what he said. ethanol does weird things to plastic & rubber, accel pump diaphragms ...

check all your rubber flex lines too, sender to frame, frame to pump and at the carb filter
