Flame comes out carb when I try to start motor

OK. I almost got my beast going this evening, but now I had a flame come out of the carb while trying to start the engine. I almost ran for a minute or two. What am doing wrong and where should i go from here?

your timing is either advanced or your running lean. also if your breather is off it is not uncommon to get backfire out of the carb.
