Suspension questions

There are a ton of great threads about the ex''s suspension. I bought a 2001 v10 ex, had no motor no trans or transfer case when I got it. The front was nose up, figured it was just because the motor and stuff was missing. Well now the motor and trans and transfer case are all in there and the front it still high.

I looked at the front springs and found they are 2 inch pro comp springs. I have a 3 inch hanger that I've had for some time now, and I'm thinking about installing them with the current springs. My question is what do I do with the back? Should I go b-codes with a 4.5 inch block? 4 inch lift springs and a small block for the rear? I want it to be flat and level. Thanks for the help in advance.

Well, IF those front springs are really giving 2" additional ride height over stock and IF the hangers (front hangers and rear shackles correct?) give a full 3" then you would have between 27.5/28" from the hub center to top of wheel well arch. For more on this measurement and what various spring mods do for ride height this thread has tons of info https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...easurents.html
So with that 27.5/28" up front you will need about 4.5" more on the rear to have it level. I have an additional 4.5/5" over stock ride height on the rear from a set of modded B codes (bottom 2 EX leaves, thicker between leaf spacers), 2 sections of the stock traction bar cut down and added to the pack and F-350 tapered blocks (3.75"-ish). My rear hub center to wheel well measurement is 28.5" with that combo, this is what it looks like.

With the new lift what size tire are you thinking of running? If you get the full 5" up front 35" or 36" tires should fit with minimal rubbing depending on the wheel geometry you choose.
How do you plan to use this V-10 EX? Any heavy towing in it's future? What gear ratio does it currently have?
If you have the more common standard 3.73 gears and go with 35" tires it will have an effective ratio of 3.37 which will deliver less than inspiring performance. A great performance and towing match for 35"s under a V-10 is 4.88 gears that will give a 4.40-ish effective ratio, that's what I'm running and it tows our 11K TT very well and is fun to drive unloaded.

I havent put a tape on it yet but i would day the front is at least 2 inches higher in the front as it sits right now without the hangers.

I have a set of 35's on 20x12 wheels that will be going on it. It has 4.30 gears, its going to be my wife's kid hauler as our cc 06 6.0 is running out of room with 3 kids. We may tow with it but it would be a SxS or something smaller, not a TT.

So you bought b code springs and put the bottom springs on the b-codes that came on the stock Ex spring pak? Then swapped out the rear block with a F350 block?

I wasn't sure if I could stick with factory block and just run the lift springs. I also read that Pro Comps 22415 4 inch rear lift springs will give the EX more like 5 to 5.5 inches of lift since the springs are for a truck not an Ex and the they sit lower than a SD.

The only way to tell what lift you have, is to measure from center of hub to the top of the fender - that dimension eliminates all the variables (tire size, tire pressure, rim size, etc.).

Once you identify the center of hub to top of the fender opening, we'll be able to tell how much "lift" there is in the front and/or the rear.

Did you happen to install the same engine as was original?? (i.e. if original a Diesel but you installed the 5.4 gas, it would sit a bit higher from less engine weight)

It left the factory with a v10 so that's what I put back in it. I'll have to tape it later today and get back to you on that.

Are you saying that as it sits now the front is 2" higher than the rear?

I have a set of 35's on 20x12 wheels that will be going on it. It has 4.30 gears, its going to be my wife's kid hauler as our cc 06 6.0 is running out of room with 3 kids. We may tow with it but it would be a SxS or something smaller, not a TT.
35"s and 4.30 gears will give an effective 3.88 ratio, that should be fine for a daily driver that see a little towing.

So you bought b code springs and put the bottom springs on the b-codes that came on the stock Ex spring pak? Then swapped out the rear block with a F350 block?
Yes, that is the typical B code "Mod" around here. Then along with the taller F-350 block I also cut the factory traction bars up and added 2 sections of them to each side's spring pack.

I wasn't sure if I could stick with factory block and just run the lift springs. I also read that Pro Comps 22415 4 inch rear lift springs will give the EX more like 5 to 5.5 inches of lift since the springs are for a truck not an Ex and the they sit lower than a SD.
I'm pretty sure that in that suspension mod and measurement thread I linked to earlier that some folks there are running those same Pro Comp 22415 rear springs, check it out to see how much lift they got from them.

That is what I'm saying, the springs are pretty new and I found the code on them, I looked it up and they are 2 inch lift pro comp springs for the f250/f350 trucks.

I didn't get back to the shop to check axle to fender, but here's a shot of it so you can see what I'm working with.

Yeah, it's sitting up there a bit. You will definitely need to get the measurements though, the SD pickups start out 2" higher than the EX so if those springs are supposed to be 2" lift for a truck they may be giving up to 4" on the big wagon.

Ok put a tape on it today and I got 27" up front and 24.5" in the rear. So according to what ive read, most stock ex's are around 23.5 up front, so that's 3.5 inches over stock.

So now what? Do i try and get a 2 inch s/h kit for the front and still get the Pro Comp 22415 springs for the rear plus maybe a 3 inch block? Do the B-codes with mods and a 5 inch block? I really didn't want to go over 6 inches of lift and no bigger than a 35.

If a block is needed, i'm going to run a PMF block, they have the U bolt ties, come in .5 inch increments and are adj front to back for axle placement.

You have 2 choices:
a) lower the front (not sure how you can easily do that)
b) raise the rear (put a bigger block on the rear)

OR put a big Diesel engine up front (probably too much work).

Don't want to lower it.

Would like to run smallest block of no block in the rear. Be able to clear 35's on 20x12 wheels without rubbing.

Bought a 7.3 diesel to put into it but it is too much work and the entire wiring harness has to be changed on the inside l, that sounds like a PITA!

So I ended up buying a 3 inch block from PMF, I have Pro Comp 4 inch rear springs, track bar drop bracket, drop pitman arm, mini pack and 2 inch S/H kit, 20x12 wheels and 37" toyo's.

Once the motor and trans are back in well see how this all looks.

I figured you all might like to see how it ended up.

As it started, 27 inches from center of hub to fender on the front. 24.5 inches in the rear.

Kinda hard to see on the trailer but the rake is still there. Even with motor trans installed and full of fluid.

So I ran the same front springs with a 3.5 mini pak. The rear got 4 inch Pro-Comp springs on the factory block. Pro-Comp Pro Runner shocks all around. Drop track bar bracket, extended sway bar links, and drop pitman arm finish it off.

I installed the 3 inch block in the rear to level it out. Here its 32.5 front and 32.5 rear. Minor trimming on the front valance. Barely rubs when turning into the driveway. I have plans to get the 4 inch springs for the front and take most of the mini pak out of the front. Then a 4 inch block for the rear to just give it one more inch of clearance.

Thank you all for the help. Hope you all like it as much as I do.
