I have a question, but first the background: I am building a truck out of 3 trucks. Chassis is from an 87 F350 4x4 SRW that had a blown engine and trashed/rusted body. The body and transmission are an 89 F150 4x4 that had the optional granny 4-speed trans. Engine is a 8.8 I got from the junkyard out of a 91 F350 dually that was an automatic. Got the correct flywheel/clutch/pressure plate off another truck at the same junkyard.
My question is, does anyone have an 89-91 truck with the 5.8 and manual trans that they can post the EEC IV calibration code from? I need an ECM for this truck and am finding nothing but confusion looking on Ebay and at the in-complete lists of calibration codes I can find on the web. Oh, and the F150 that the body and trans came from was a 302, so I can't use the computer from it.
I have the truck up and running with a computer from a bronco that had a 5.8 and E4OD, but it of course has check engine light all the time due to not having an E4OD connected to it. Here is a pic of the truck as of this week so you can see what I am doing.
How do I translate that to the code that is printed on the tag on the side of the ECU connector? Here is a pic of one on Ebay right now that I think may be fore a manual transmission, but want to confirm before I buy it. This one has code E9D on it:
The one I posted the pic of says AE1A--does your list show that is for a manual trans? The seller is claiming it is and it is a really good price on it.
I found one on Ebay that has AEB, but it is twice the price and someone has written on it with a marker that it came out of a 1990 F250 4x4 ATA. The ATA makes me suspicious it was an auto transmission.
E9TF-AE1A should work fine. An old post of mine shows that was for a 1991 F-series with a 5.8Lengine and manual transmission. That will work in your application to the best of my knowledge.
Whatever you do once you get the PCM open it up and look for signs of leaking capacitors. A very common issue these days. As a preventive measure I would replace them once you verify it works as-is.
I ordered that one last night. 88-91 all have the same sensors and functionality on the system, so they are interchangeable. I do think there were improvements to the calibration over the years though because on other trucks of this vintage I have built, engines I have put the 90 and 91 ECUs on run much better and have better driveablity than the 88-89 ECUs.
What are the symptoms of leaking capacitors in the EEC IV? I was not aware of that issue with the EEC IV. I am skilled at electronic repair, so changing them does not scare me, but if I do it, where is a good source for the replacement caps? Is it just the large ones that are of concern and not the smaller ceramic-disc caps?
