Cool Jeff I take it that part # services dent side truck thru 1978 or 79. I will check local Ford dealer and see what they want for one.
Thanks a bunch. Now I will have to sort out the wiring. Are there terminal ends that will work with the original plug or will I be splicing the wiring back together?

Wait a minute. I don't remember now. What year column did you buy?
C3DZ3517A-upper bearing, 67/73 before ser #U60,001.

D4TZ3517B (replaced D4TZ-A) -upper bearing, 73 after ser #U60,001 through 79 with fixed column.

Jeff this bushing/ bearing isn't correct. I've measured what was in the 1st column I disassembled. The bearing measures 1.1875" x .750". It also has a rubber grommet that the bearing rides in. The OD of the grommet measures 1.339". The previous part# you gave me C3DZ3517A is 1.4375" OD and I'm not sure what the ID is. I have found a bearing # c3az3517a that appears to be correct for my application. Any thoughts on this? I would really only like to replace the grommet if possible as I have cleaned the bearing and it feels smooth and in good condition.

The rubber grommet for that upper bearing was part number D1AZ3518A. Discontinued and no replacing part number shows up in the OSI replacing part number slides that I have. And none on my locators.

As luck would have it Dennis Carpenter has it. It's listed ford # is e2az3518c Upper Steering Column Bearing Sleeve | Dennis Carpenter Ford Restoration Parts Shipping will be double the cost of the part.. Is this still available from ford? Looks like it was used thru 1989.

If I am Hijacking let me know, hope this may help others.

With all the talk of column swap, this may be pertinent. I just swapped a 77 351 into my sons 75 Explorer F100 SB 4x4. Along with the rebuilt c6 and mated 203. It has the NSS on the shift selector on the trans. The PO butchered the wiring so not sure it even works. We swapped the tilt PS column from the 79 donor 4x4. The harness was untouched. ?1. is there a schematic showing wire color and function on the 79 column so located on the pin connector, as well as the pin connector on the 75 harness. ?2. once I have the column wiring mated to the 75 harness, will the NSS be operable? ?3 what about the reverse lights, since it was originally not a PS car or an auto. On a different note, I swapped in a 79 Bronco PS box after I reversed the gear direction. I had the none tilt column and used SS Borgenson joints with a collapsible shaft. I was luck in that the spline count on the 79 tilt column matched that of the joints and the shaft extended out enough to not require a new one. The bottom column bracket on the 75 needed to be modified slightly to work with the the gear lever at the bottom but a grinder took care of it quickly, and I was able to reuse the seal. Hope this helps others, and if you can answer or provide guidance please chime in. Thanks....Mo

Disassembly steering column #2

OK I decided it was time to get something done on the new steering column I got. I have a question. This column came from a 1976 and the upper portion is the same as my previous one. The lower portion is different. Does anyone know if these 3 plastic nubs need to be removed to get access to the lower bushing?

Thanks my brothers I need some guidance.

That is a bushing and retainer assembly. Was originally part number D3TZ3C773A. Replaced by D9TZ3C773A, then D9TZ3C773B. Discontinued. During one of those replacements Ford deleted the metal bushing and made the whole thing plastic. Which DC has for $5.95. Me personally, I'd rather have the original one with a metal bushing. So I ran the D3TZ3C773A.

Cool Jeff, how do I remove it from the shaft. It looks like I need to break the nubs off to get the bearing retainer plate off. There is a sir clip of some kind in between the plastic and metal piece.

So I went ahead and carved on the nubs with a stanley knife and yes the hold the retainer on. I found a post on the dentside pages and figured "No guts no glory". After I realized the only thing holding the bearing on the steering shaft was 40 some odd years of crud. I got it all apart cleaned everything up and I think I can redneck it back together. If not I can always get a new lower bearing.

After I gave everything a soak in mineral spirits, a lot of scrubbing, scraping, and wiping.

The only casualty was the bearing grommet. But as luck would have it I had already bought one OEM on E-bay. I cleaned up the column and gave it a shot of Rust Reformer. Waiting for stuff to dry. I'll prime it for paint tomorrow.

I knew it had been replaced but didn't think to look in a Car text slide. None of my O.S.I slides showed a replacement.
