Unhappy Long Block; Replace? Rebuild? Remortgage?

Just heard word from the dealership that a timing issue and phaser issue is just the start of my new problems. I need a new long block they figure, although they haven't gone all the way I. To discover what the knock issue is coming from. My quote was $10,000 CAD for a new one. It's the 3.5 turbo eco boost. salvaged and rebuilt ones are proving impossible to find due to this issue apparently becoming quite common. Found one salvaged one for $4500 but it's "slightly damaged" from an accident. I'm pretty green in the engine game, and am starting to explore a rebuild with a company in town.
Has anyone else gone this route and know rough costs? Trying to keep this at $5000 max repair. I'm guessing labour is going to smoke me too.

How many miles on your truck? Pass drive train warranty?

I would guess they will go with no less than 10hrs at a minimum of $100 (US).

If it were me and I had to pay for it out of pocket I would find a real engine builder and have it done right for that kind of money.

A new long block would certainly be done right...I'd trust that more than an aftermarket rebuild. You'd save lots of money with an aftermarket build, though.

Curious to know more about the failure. How many miles on the truck? What year? Any preceding symptoms? What was it's maintenance history like? Are you the original owner?

Have been told my power train warranty was 5yr/100k. Jan. 9-17 was the 5 year and I'm at 110,000 currently.
Had a timing chain issue, phasers issue and have learned about a recall that was to reprogram the power train control module.
Maintenance history went by regularly scheduled visits for oil and tune up. Has been 4500km since the last one. 2nd owner. Purchased from dealership at 65k 16 months ago.

Gas Engines | Jasper Remanufactured Engines

Can't go wrong by doing a little research right here at Jasper. I had one installed in my '88 and it was a great replacement engine that far outlasted the OE engine. I'd have a hard time giving my money to Ford twice for the same truck.
