Well, GB, you will need to find out if the engine is a G or H. On my G engine, I ran into issues with clutch pressure plate and integral cast iron bell housing. Of course I wanted to replace the clutch when I rebuilt the engine. I ordered what was advertised as the correct pressure plate and disc but when it came time to put them in, the stamped housing of the pressure plate ended up being too tall after it was bolted down to the flywheel. The pressure plate would not clear the inside of the integral G engine bell housing. It was only about 3/16" too tall but enough to be an issue. After ordering and trying 2 different clutch sets, I resorted to having the original pressure plate and disc reconditioned here in Lincoln where I live. No problems after that. See if you can get the original clutch for the 6 cylinder if you get one. With the stamped steel housing for the H mentioned above, this might not be an issue.

Michael a, I talked with a guy in Ocala FL today that has a couple of the 6 cylinder engines. Not sure if you are looking for one? They sound like they are complete and one of them runs. One has all the extras such as air cleaner, manifolds, carb, etc and even the 6 cyl radiator. The other engine turns but stops and the guy thinks there might be a stuck valve. I have emailed him to find out if they are G or H engines. He says out of a '47 which might mean an H, but early '47's still had G's. Will also find out prices.

Thanks Rickster for inquiring. I guess it is time to let the cat out of the bag as far as what I am thinking. I am getting to the age that I need to slow down and smell the roses. I am not going to be one of those jerks with a fanny pak and shorts carrying my wifes purse to every eatery in the state. I have been wanting to go on some tours and different activities that the V8 club and some groups like that have. I have been thinking about a shoebox ford with a 6 or maybe a model A. I am just testing the waters for now, but that is what is in my mind.

I am with you! Having a car/truck project, or two, is a great way to meet others and go to events. I am currently checking out where some of the vintage license plate swap meets will be this year. I happened to be talking to the guy in Ocala about some other parts when he brought up that he had these 6 cylinder engines he pulled out of a couple project trucks. Since I mentioned previously that they come up for sale occasionally, it was a coincidence since you recently started this thread. Hope you figure out which way you want to go with your project. A lot of great help (and friends!) on FTE when you get started.

Are these three gals a 'fanny pack'? Or are you saying I'm being a judgemental old lady? Either way it's a funny picture, and I'm glad they aren't wearing shorts. As for the flathead six, I just had a visit from the guy who owns it. He wants me to take a bunch of flathead v8 stuff that belonged to his father in law. Maybe six blocks with cranks and most other stuff, a cleaned magged 59ab, and a sioux valve grinding setup he had loaned to me earlier would now be mine along with a Van Dorn seat grinder with all the flathead stuff. The six he threw in at the end of our deal, saying I might as well clean out that end of his shop. The six came from a good running '51 panel that got an 8 installed. Complete from carb to clutch on a run stand and painted a nice blue, but not recently. Looks like it had been pretty fresh when removed. I now realize I didn't ask whether the dist was on nose or the side. Thinking the side mount from memory and also coming from a '51. He lives about 3 miles from here, so we will know soon. He's a great guy and a full time mechanic for 26 years, but die hard vintage (tri-5) gm, so no use for the old man's flathead stuff. Details to come.

lol, yes you are on the right track,
it sounds like you have an H series six. That is good! It sounds like you need to pour a slab now and put up another building.

I'll need a few helpers to do that this spring.

Well after that last post I went and got a flashlight and walked down to the parts panel truck. I wanted to see if it had the six cyl type of tranny. Turns out It wasn't the radiator that lead me to believe it was a 6 cyl truck, it was the engine. There is no radiator but it has a stuck, rusty G type six and a 4 speed trans. Looks complete except for carb and distributor.

I've owned two '49s with the flat six and both had the side distributor so the engine from the '51 should have been side mount.

GB, that '51 sounds like it might be OK. Good to hear it is complete. And that engine in the panel parts truck missing 2 parts that are a little difficult to find but I do see them on eBay once in a while. I also have been talking to a guy in Ocala FL that might have those parts. I might go with the '51 if I was trying to decide. Just have to figure out what trans you might have to go with it. As mentioned previously, the V8 trans and bell housing adapter you already have in your truck might be close. I am kind of stuck with the G series engines since that is what I started with. I might be a source to lift you of the G stuff someday.

I'm planning on an 8 for the woodie with Stu's 3 speed. The H would probably go in my tonner pu and use a 4 speed. That's what is in the 1/2 ton panel so I would use that transmission if I need a specific one for the six. At least a year out on this though. Maybe more at my current snail's pace. 38 degrees and damp today. I'm inside for my second warm up of the day while working on woodie. I have a 220 volt heater on one glue joint and a pair of 500 watt halogens on another. My electric meter is about to spin off it's axis!
