Intermittent Automatic Headlights

I think my X is showing its age. My Excursion is a 2003 Eddie Bauer 7.3, so it comes with all the goodies, like auto headlights. Recently, with the headlight switch turned to the auto setting, the lights do not come on automatically. A couple things that sometimes work to get the lights to come on is switching the headlight switch back and forth, and also rolling the inside cab lights on and off.

Is this more of a switch problem? Or can someone explain how the auto headlights work? I would like to know if there is a sensor that I need to make sure is clean.

Thanks!

There should be a small plastic sensor on your dash. That's what decides if it's dark enough for the lights to come on.

Sounds like you could have a potential switch problem. Sometimes things that are on their way out will be intermittent before they die completely.
