Well, this past weekend I put on my new Borla cat-back exhaust and my new K&N Aircharger kit.....I g-teched before and after and only gained .02 on my 1/4 mile. I did not do the hp test with the g-tech, but these numbers did not sound right.
It sure sounds great now....the K&N kit really screams when I start it up, but that goes away after about 30 seconds.
After I get my diablo and have it custom programmed, I should have significant gains.....at least I hope.
the filter kit you added gives 10-15 ENGINE HP..not rear4 wheel the exaust will give you more tourque than HP. bboth are good mods but, future mods you add will show more gains because of the mods you added. try a throttle body and maybe a superchip...you will see some gains there...
to get the most out of your truck u need the hole exhaust replaced from headers and with a 3 inch outlet tail pipe or at lease a dual sede exhause that comes like 2inch 1\2 dual pipes from headers each header on a pipe
You should've gained noticeable horspower and torque. I have a 97 Explorer XLT V8 and just put on a 70 series flowmaster exhaust and a MAC intake kit the other day. Don't know what the numbers on the improvement are but I can say that there is a significant difference in performance. Can't wait to get a Superchip module on it!
Does any one know of any company that makes headers for a 97 Explorer V8. I've searched but haven't had any luck.
Before anyone decides to swap out to a larger throttle body, get a computer tuned chip otherwise you'll run the risk of running too lean and ping your motor to death.
What was the air temp and humidity you ran at both times? If there was a difference, or if your Explorer was running hotter or colder on either test, that can make a difference on quarter runs. A new intake and a catback system do not make that big of an improvement in a quarter run. Especially just a catback system. You still have the cats that came on the X in its factory setup, you still have that much restriction. A catback system dies no tchange the power as much as it does the sound. Like AdiDcn said, you need to do the full exhaust to see any real noticeable gains in a quarter run...
rb26powered: Sorry - but they do not make any headers for the Explorer V8 anymore. There are a few people I know in the process of making a custom setup, but they are not done and I don't know what they are going to charge to make a set.
I plan on going to a high flow cat, as some have mentioned even though I put on a flowmaster exhaust there still is the stock cat restriction. BTW, why would one put so much effort in getting better quarter times?....It's a SUV not a dragstrip warrior. I'm happy just to get that extra power to charge onto the crazy California freeways. But then again, reading some of the posts have tempted me to going to an aftermarket throttle body...I just ordered a Superchip Module last night...thanks to you speed demons. I have to remind myself it's an SUV!
I just came back from a trip and put 438 freeway miles driving at an average of about 70mph. I filled up and was able to top off the tank at 20.4 gallons. After doing the math, I came up with my highway mileage at 21mpg. How many gallons does a 97 V8 Explorer hold? I figure if I were to drive it near empty I could avergage about 23mph driving conservatively. Before putting the intake kit and the flowmaster, I was averaging 16-18 mpg on the hwy. My avg city mileage was about 12 mpg. I'm assuming the mods I've done contributed to the increase in mileage? If that's true, what a trade off!...improved performance and gas mileage...now that's a deal!
